MY17 Superb SLA Headlights Upgrade - Help

Recommended Posts

looking to see if i can get suggestions on how to "activate" by retrofitted SLA headlights.

essentially i'm getting an "cornering light (AFS)" error, meaning the high beam fancy masking/patterns (rollers) aren't working, let alone the shutters (HBA on/off).

vcds autoscans show 2 faults in module 4B, saying the controllers are "Not coded".

it looks like we need to upload (via ODIS/VCP) some parameters to the 4B module, telling it's now got SLA and how to use it.

not sure, how do get this bit done.

Is your car not under warranty as it is only two years old. If so get it to the dealer. Why try something that you do not need to.

or did I miss something. I know you want to activate the SLA if you can but fix the original problem first.

Yes , he modified his car by retrofitting different headlight units, and possibly recoded something, so voiding his warranty.

Skoda will not be interested in helping him.

now, about the retrofit (what i'm trying to do).......

essentially i'm trying to retrofit Smart Light Assist (SLA) headlights to my mk3 Superb. i.e. the high beams that change shape of the high beam by utlising rollers n shutters. the next level up from High Beam Assist (HBA).

in europe, SLA is a factory option. here in oz, we don't get the option because VW don't want us to have it,
I have HBA working all good.

to do this, i replaced my existing xenon headlights with SLA capable xenon headlights, and replaced 2 controllers (1 on each headlight).

essentially plug'n'play.  no additional wiring, or modifying harnesses.

These r the differences between the two xenon headlights the Superb uses:-

non-SLA version A

  1. Headlight - 3Vx 941 01y A (x=LHD/RHD, y=left/right)
  2. power module for cornering light - 8U0 941 329
  3. power module for day driving lights - 4G0 907 397 Q
  4. control unit for gas discharge lamp - 8K0 941 597 B
  5. harness for vehicle lighting for headlamps - 3V0 941 813
  6. retaining ring for gas discharge bulb - n/a

SLA version B (same as above, but has dynamic rollers and shutters, and circuitry for the DRL whiskers)

  1. Headlight - 3Vx 941 01y B (x=LHD/RHD, y=left/right)
  2. power module for cornering light - 4H0 941 329
  3. power module for day driving lights - 4G0 907 397 Q
  4. control unit for gas discharge lamp - 8K0 941 597 B
  5. harness for vehicle lighting for headlamps - 3V0 941 813
  6. retaining ring for gas discharge bulb - 8P0 941 621

both the power modules (#2, #3 & #4) and ballast are mounted on the headlight itself.
with the retaining ring (#6), the B version uses a different mechanism to hold the D3S globe in place.  hence the method to remove and install the xenon bulb is very different.

given that, the theory was:-

  1. swap out my A version headlights and put in B version headlights
  2. install 4H0 modules in the B version headlights
  3. transfer 4G0 modules from version A headlights to version B headlights
  4. transfer 8K0 ballasts from version A headlights to version B headlights
  5. transfer D3S bulb version A headlights to version B headlights, utilizing the retaining ring.
  6. activate/code the 4H0 slave modules
  7. do the appropriate coding in A5 Front Sensor.
  8. do the appropriate coding in 4B Multi-funct module
  9. do the appropriate adaptations in 09 Central Electrics

and voila - we have SLA.

now the actuals, based on the theory:-
1. success
the headlight plug on version B had slightly different pin arrangements, however the wiring harness from the car to it had that covered. i.e. it wasn't blank and had a matching wiring to the pin.

2. success

3. success

4. success

5. success

6. no success or not required or unknown?
it appears the slave modules should be automatically coded by coding the master, in this case 4b.  however, mine is still complaining about "not coded"
with pre-MY17 Superbs with SLA fitted, under Addres 55 Headlight range, the 4H0 module was coded as B30000.
non SLA Superbs with the 8U0 module were coded as B20000.
with post MY17, this is now under 4B, and the coding is "000000". doesn't matter if the SLA version (4H0) or non-SLA version (8U0), its all zeros.

7. success
changed from "FLA: BCM-Fernlicht" (HBA) to "FLA: Fernlicht (GLW:MDF)" for SLA
from
020408010000010100022354C050A90088000E100020
to
020408020000040100022355C050A90098000E100040

8. Fail
Despite the coding being done and accepted, 2 faults reported - power output module not coded
changed from
000000020100066E06003F0100000000000000000000
to
000000020100066E06007F0100000000000000000000

9. success.

Below is an autoscan of the 4B module on my car.  i've compared it to other Superbs with factory SLA, and it matches (part numbers both SW & HW, LCoding & SCoding).

i've also compared Adaptation Maps.

There must be something hidden, somewhere, that is required to tell 4B that it now has new slaves (4H0).

Hi, I'm thinking to do the same thing, did you managed to activate everything? I'm now looking for the parts, but before that need to do a research and see is it possible.

i haven't completed the retrofit yet - so i can't say 100%.

hardware is in.

coding is done.

the last bit left to do is to get the SLA (AFS_MDA)  parameters into the 4B module.  this done via a combo of ODIS and VCP.

once the data is uploaded, it should all work.

planning to get this done over the coming easter break.

will update this post after its done.

How are you getting this done @JR RS? Sounds like a step above regular coding, right?

with the help of a friend, who has "connections" and is very experienced with this kind of stuff, albeit in the VW and Audi realms.

correct - this is certainly a step above "regular coding"

we're still not 100% sure this plan will work - but we're confident.

he's done a similar thing successfully with activating DLA (vw's version of SLA) on a Passat B8.

my fingers, legs, and eyes r crossed...........

Sorry - I'm still waiting for the 4B parameter file to be sourced.

Once I have it, and upload it via VCP, I'm hoping that is the final piece in the puzzle.

Will keep u updated.

Kamold? Bloody smart fella him. If I kept my Kodiaq for longer I would've been interested in getting Traffic Jam Assist coded in via VCP.

Finally got some good news to report - the final piece to the puzzle, the AFS_MDF data file, was successfully loaded today, via ODIS, into the 4B module and the SLA functionality is now fully operational.

No errors. wooOoot

I went for a quick test drive and its certainly masking the auto high beams, as expected.

Will take some vids soon.

A BIG BIG thanks to Kamold and Magnus with their assistance, and patience.

So summary:-

- replace with version B headlights

- replace LCM module with 4H0 type

- code changes to 4b module

- code changes to 09 module

- afs_mdf data/parameter file upload

JR. Pleased to see you got it sorted. You will notice a great difference but I warn you that, at first, it can be mesmerising watching the changing patterns of the headlamp beams. Enjoy after all your efforts.

Just out of interested, what was the cost of all these components? :)

If u source (can't get them locally in Australia) the parts brand new + shipping then u'd b looking close to AUD $3k.  Then labour cost to replace the old with the new. It involves removing the front wheels and bumper - so not an easy job.

However I sourced, from various places, the parts secondhand and did the install myself. Cost me less than a third of what it would've cost if I went brand new and got a workshop to install.
