Good deal?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I've been 'lurking' for a while now on the forum as I've been looking for a Octavia vRS. Was originally looking at a Face Lift Diesel, but I've now decided to go for an older Petrol.

I've seen a Blue vRS Hatchback 54k miles, basic spec (apart from a 'TURBO' badge, which I'll remove!) I think I'd get it for around £6k, it's seem in good nic with service history etc.

Just wondered if it sounds a good deal in terms of getting a vRS, it would be a private sale so no warranty. I do about 10-12k miles a year and my journey to work is only 10 miles down B & A roads so I thought the petrol made more sense.

I suppose I'm a little concerned that maintenance may begin to get expensive, I don't know if it's had cambelt change or anythingat the moment as I've not scrutinised the service receipts.

I know you probably get tired of these type questions, so thank you in advance if anyone replies!

Cheers

Check it's history - if it's coming from a Skoda dealer they should be able to give it to you.

If not, should be able to ask Skoda for a copy.

At 54k miles it probably won't have had the cambelt/waterpump change (which is recommended at 60k).

So you do need to budget that in - and that isn't cheap.

If dealer you could ask for that to be done before purchase.

You haven't said how old the car is.

Check it has 18" wheels, jumbobox storage, rear electric windows and climatronic AC - all of these came in an update pack and make a Mk2 Octy more desireable.

Mk2 Octy vRS likes to run on Super Unleaded - so remember that when it comes to calculating fuel costs.

General maintenance isn't too bad - you will probably need to top-up oil ever month or so.

Services are usually quite reasonable.

The only other issue with Mk2 vRS's is an ABS sensor failing.

Used to be a £800+ repair, but now with a repair kit costs around £150.

Unfortunately with the Mk2 it seems to be more of a matter of when this will fail and not just if (ESP light will come on and stay on when it happens).

Not really anything you can do on that front.

Sorry it's a 56 plate. Wow thanks loads of food for thought. Front electric windows only so I assume it's not got the update pack.

Have taken note about the service costs an ABS sensor failing.

Ok all things considered, am I best walking away and saving for a newer model? I did think it seemed 'cheap' against others I've seen on autotrader etc.

why don't you go much cheaper and go for a markI. There is a lovely 2005 estate with similar mileage for sale in the classifieds for a little over half the price of what you are looking at ;)

One listed here for £6k.

So OK, 77k miles - so check to see if the cambelt has been done.

But it's listed as having 18" wheels, jumbobox etc

Also in a rarer colour - red:

I'd still say that was a pretty good price really, despite it not having the jumbo pack, and you'll have some bargaining power in there too.

£6k for a 56reg 54k vRS.

Edit: Also "rare" != good. ;)

Thanks for the advice, will look to pay less than the £6k I'd budgeted for. Will let you know how I get on! Hope to be a vRS owner by this time next week!
