1.9 TDi engine biggest power

Featured Replies

I've just been thinking - I've seen 20vt's go to over 700 bhp, and 400+ is relatively commonplace. B)

What is the most power anyone has got from a 1.9 TDi lump (pd or not)?

There's a few Mk1 Fabia vRS' running 270+bhp from the PD130

To be honest, I was looking for anything a bit more ambitious. :D No 500+ engines about? bet the torque would rip them to bits!

It's because diesel has such a narrow power band I presume. Even with a huuuuge turbo, you still wouldn't get much power over 5k. If anything, smaller is better so it will spool early enough to make the most of the slow burn time of diesel. That, and a massively high compression ratio.

I am aware of some bonkers European Lupo 4x4 running 400+ on a PD130 based lump. However it was for drag racing only and usually needed rebuilding on a regular basis. A reliable 300 has been achieved as well. I know of a tuner in Holland who takes part in time attack with a 300hp Ibiza, and it seems reliable.

I think the thing to remember here is that the degree of tuning required to get a tdi to that power level is much higher than that of the equivalent petrol (e.g., the non-turbo 20V petrol is 125bhp, the non turbo 1.9 diesel is 68bhp . . . there's already a significant difference). I think this boils down to the fact that diesels don't tend to produce as much power per displacement as petrol units do, so comparing like for like is always going to result in the tdi engines lagging behind (no pun intended).

As has been mentioned, with strong enough internals etc. then progressively bigger turbos could be bolted on but the spool times would get ridiculous and the power delivery all but useless. Alternatively, twin-turbos could be utilised . . . but as far as I'm aware, nobody has attempted this as a modification (although some small-ish tdi units do exist with this setup, e.g., the engine used in the BMW 123d). I would have thought a twin-turbo unit based around a bombproof block and internals was the way forwards for big power in the world of diesels. :)

How about a high boost supercharger or TSI style super/turbo system? That would give you good boost from near enough idle.

Either that, or use some kind of anti-lag system with something in the exhaust manifold to ignite the fuel. You could spool a massive turbo at idle, and have all the benefits of a massive turbo.

Hypothetically speaking or course. If Carlsberg did diesel engines.... :D

they don't, but

How many superchargers??? :o

Reckon that would just about fit in the octy that would. B)

I think the biggest reliable power has is 300 see an Octavia in Germany with that power race a 911 Carerra 4s and win!

I think with diesels though its not really a problem getting the power its like with anything how much you want to spend and how much smoke you like
