OMG cheap Winter tyres

Recommended Posts

I take it they're part worns? How much tread is on them? If the seller is any good could you post a link up?

Remember that tyre manufactures of winter tyres say 4 mm is considered the minimum for winter tyres. The tyres are not as effective at any lower tread depth. 5 mm would be fine part worn summer tyre, (1.6 min), but not winter tyre.

Agreed, although I always thought most summer tyre manufacturers recommend changing tyres at 3mm rather than the 1.6mm legal minimum. That's why some part worns appear to be bargains with say 5mm tread whereas in reality they would only be good enough for one season.

Put simply, a winter tyre requires more tread to operate effectively, due to the manufacture of the tyre compound. Because there's more silica in the compound, to allow movement of the rubber in cold conditions, it involves far more movement of the tread blocks than a 'summer' tyre. Therefore, if you have much less than 4mm, they won't work as well.

It's also more likely that the tread will fill up with ice/snow etc when in use, so the more tread that's present, the more effectively the tyre can gain traction.
