what to look for on the 1.3l skoda engines

Featured Replies

Two pieces of imformation i would like to obtain.

Firstly how do i know wheather the 1.3L engine is the 60bhp or 69bhp model???

Secondly... whilst i know enough about the 1.6 vag engines i wouldn't mind a few pointers for the 1.3L engines and what to look for...

i am looking to buy a 1.3L 69bhp Felly with sub 100k and some service history.. doesn't need to be taxed and i want it to have minimum 4months MOT

bugdet £300 Mustn't be Faded Red colour though

any tips?

Engine - either look for the code (on the end of the block by the water pump, usually covered in gunk) - 135 is a low comp one (40kW), 136 is a high comp (50kW), I believe.

Main thing is rattly chain, I think - everything else is dead simple, although so is the chain to replace.

so it wasn't a case of say a pre 1997 are all 40kw and post 1997 are all 50kw

i was hoping it was simply done of model year or something like spi versus mpi

this car is for a girlfriend and i want it to be as cheap to run and maintain as possible, but should i get a 40kw low comp eninge can a high comp 50kw head be fitted to bring it upto 50kw or is it more complicated than that??

djaychela if i recall correctly you know the 135/136 engines better than most here... without headwork is there any go faster stuff that can be done...

i am thinking that i could do the same to it as i did my 1.6 and fit the 50mm diesel system when the existing system breaks..not really expecting gains from that though. but is the standard airbox more than sufficent like the 1.6's airbox is???

do any of the 1.3l's have the rear anti-roll fitted to the axle like my 1.6l glxi does???

and i intend to fit the thicker FARB off the Caddy 9u to my 1.6 to reduce lean. Can the same be done to the 1.3L???

Lol i have done some research and i was right on both points strangely

i read that the pre-1997 where single point injection and 54bhp

the post 1997 where multi point injection and 67bhp. so i was after a facelift model any hows so this works out perfectly.

FYI i was gonna start a post about this separately but i don't think there is enough interest to bother but i did a 0-60 sprint quite a few times times with proper timing gear times where

1st run 11.3secs

2nd run 10.5secs

3rd run 9.7secs

4th run 10.7secs

5th run 10.2secs

6th run 10.3secs

7th run 9.9secs

8th run 10.0secs

offical figures are 12secs

a mk4 Golf GTI 2.0 8v does it in 10.8secs

my mums focus tdci 115ps does it in 10.7secs

toyota avensis 140bhp d4-d 10.4secs

this gives you a feel for the cars i can complete against in traffic light grand prix

a little more work and i can tie a Fiesta Zetec S 1.6 100bhp which is 9.9secs(there a little hooligan in my area with a fiesta zetec S i think they are mk4's??) and he needs embarassing in front of his friends and what better car to do it than a beaten up S reg skoda!!!

Right, the SPi was also available in both hp ratings. Only the bog standard LXi was 54 bhp in the early Fellys, all the rest had the carry over 67 bhp unit from the Favorit 'iE' models. Very early models are easy to spot, as they have a crude 2 spoke steering wheel, and 100 years logos on the wings.

The facelift L model was also the lower power unit, but in MPi form, and didn't come with PAS and driver airbag later either. I think the run out Popular was also fitted with the 54 bhp unit too. If its an early Felly, LXi plus and GLXi were the 67 bhp unit. Mk1 B MPi 68 bhp versions were the LXi & GLi. The GLi had PAS, but the LXi didn't. Facelift models with the 68 bhp MPi unit were LXi & GLi models, both of which had standard PAS and airbag.

So basically avoid the very base models and you will be guaranteed the more powerful engine. All the special edition Felicia 1.3's such as the Bohemia, Lauren & Klement (rare as hens teeth), Pacific & Magic all had the 67/68 bhp engine.

Also check for mayo in the coolant, and water pump leaks too. The pump is on the right hand side and is part of the engine mount. Any puddles around there and you have issues.

Hope that helps you.

I have a facelift LXi; MPi 68bhp and airbag yes, but no PAS, so must have been an option on this model.
