Front grille

Featured Replies

I know this has been posted about before but i JUST CANT FIND IT!!! Im interested in painting my fabia chrome grille black magic, does anyone have any ideas how to do this? Guides? Links to the right threads????? Thanks in advance!:thumbup:

Just a guess, but how about removing the grille unit (I think it just unscrews off the front of the bonnet), masking everything but the chrome, priming it and then spraying it with whatever colour you wish. You'd need a few coats of course and a final coat of lacquer, but that's what I'd do if I were that way inclined. I reckon you might be able to remove the chrome bit altogether if you were careful, but it might be quite thin and once you'd bent it, that would be it...

I'd imagine that you'd need to rub the chrome so that a primer would stick to it. The garage did mine!

So if i remove the grille, can i pull it apart easily? Do i have to rub the chrome bit down? Where doi i get the paint? Should i just pull it off, pull it apart, primer the unit then paint it, then laquer it???

Where do i get primer from???

Dunno about dismantling the grille, but it'd certainly be an easier job than painting in situ if you can take it apart. Roughening the surface of the chrome probably ain't a bad idea. Use the really fine sandpaper stuff that's used for bodywork repairs otherwise you'll end up with big gouges in the metal.

As far as where to get the stuff from, you'll be able to get everything you need from Halfrauds (except masking tape, for which you might need a trip to B&Q - remember to remove it as soon as the new paint's dry to avoid knackering the paint it's stuck to  ).

You may wish to get the Black Magic paint from a dealer to ensure as good a match as you can get, but since it's never going to be absolutely perfect with metallic / pearlescent paint, I'm not sure it'll be a better match than the stuff you can get elsewhere...

Good luck! :)

Thanks a lot!!!

If you are able to take some snaps whilst you're doing it please do, I'm contemplating doing the same to mine once I get it :)

if anyones interested i'll be selling my sports grill off my furby this weekend. check out my avatar and my personal profile.

Tom.

PS: Having looked at the post about taking an Octy grille apart, you may need to buy a drill, a metal bit the correct size (about 1mm or so wider than the hole in the middle of the rivet), a pop riveter and some rivets too!

Should still be able to get everything between Halfords and B&Q - or anywhere similar of course!

sorry to bring back an old thread ... but did the OP manage to get his furby grille apart in the end? I am gonna be painting my surround purple at the weekend and would be sooooooooo much easier than doing it while still stuck togehter if it does come apart?

Cheers :D

Yes it does come apart!

Open the bonnet, and look under the grill area, you will see a few allen bolts, carefully remove these and the whole grille will come off of the car. Then once it is off you should be able to seperate all the seperate components of the grill to just leave you with the chrome piece. To remove the badge I used a soldering iron to melt the plastic lugs on the back, in such a way that it could be re-used after and re-stuck it with some silicon. Its really easy to do, once you have it in your hand, it should make sense!

Rub the chrome down with sandpaper not too coarse, but finish it with some wet and dry to get it nice and smooth, I also used some etch primer in a spray can and then the paint stuck very well to it.

Hope this helps, Si.

When you remove the slatted part from the chrome peice you have to prize plastic clips apart to get them seperated

This is when they can start to snap and ping all over the place

Two snapped when i did my grille a while back.

Thanks guys! Will give it a go sat evenin once my monster is in bed then.
