Hi i have a 2003 skoda fabia it didnt come with a turbo charged engine and well now it does and I wanna change my back drum breaks to disc breaks. I know u normally have to change the whole hub and stuff. U see im not from the uk im from the caribbean and thats definitely not something ill get here does anyone know a website where i can get this and any other cars that hubs might match up that might be easier to get. thanks a lot

I wouldn't bother to be honest mate,

I have two Fabias one with drums and one with discs.

I have replaced the rear discs and pads on my vRS since I've owned the car

and at just a year and a bit old they look as bad as the ones I took off with

frightful rust and making all manner of moo-ing noises when reversing and braking.

Our lower spec Fabia SDI with drum brakes suffer no such problems and they

are silent in operation unlike the discs on the vRS which often

squeak during low speed usage.

Also our SDI is held by its handbrake better on a hill

than the vRS which can creep backwards if it's not applied firmly enough.

In normal driving rear discs will offer little if any additional braking capability.

The system is biased so that the front brakes do most of the work.

Last but not least, the standard discs lip very quickly as the pads don't

come to the edge which accelerates the rusting of the edges.

In short the rear disc setup they use for these cars is rubbish.

I had the same rear disc and pad setup on my last car (VW Bora)

and it was rubbish on there too with all the same faults listed above.

I used to have a slightly sloped drive and woke up one winter morning to find

the Bora had rolled back during the night into next doors house after first levelling

a pair of garden gates :o

Never trusted the handbrake in the Bora again always leaving it in gear after that.

Hubs are the same.

All you need are discs, pads, calipers, carriers and handbrake cables.

99% braking on the front brakes 1% on the rear, save your money and get something else for your car.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Rear discs may suck but they do look better, haha!

Never trust any handbrake on any car!!!..as the cable can stretch or mainly the pads and discs cool down thus releasing their grip.....allways put the car in gear....1st if facing uphill and reverse if facing downhill....it still amazes me the ammount of people who don't do this....I think the insurance companies should not pay out for accidents where people don't put the car in gear!!!!

P.s. I have rear discs as they came fitted as standard to the 1.4 16v 100bhp engine....I wouldn't swap them for any thing else...they do give more grip especially if you have weight in the back ....in my case sking/climbing gear and two mates!!!! Plus they are easier to service than drums!!! B)

Do you think they should pay out to the people who turn the key in gear and smash up whatever the car hits? I know it's obvious to check it's not in gear before you start the car but is easily forgotten.

One of my other cars has rear disc brakes and I was advised many years ago that the correct way to apply the handbrake is, press the brake pedal first (thus pushing the pads to the disc), then apply the handbrake, it's always worked well for me.

When I start the car I put my foot down on the cluch to release it and put the gearstick in neutral (handbrake still applied and trusted only for this short time)...allways!...Also if you leave the car in gear and the cluch engaged the car doesn't start properly!!....warning you that you feked up!! IF you want to see your parked car roll down a hill and kill someone/hit another car etc (just google it there have been lots of accidents) then fine! B)

No. It just jerks forward (with the useless handbrake you talk about being the only thing stopping it) and stalls. I've moved the car a happy 12 inches by forgetting it's in gear and turning the key. I'm just happy there was no one parked there!

Thats what I meant....but never had it move more than 4inches max!

Try it with the handbrake off, or on very weak ;)

I've never forgotten again :D
