Does Re-Mapping limit engine life?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Sorry if this has been covered before in a previous thread.

Does have a re-mapped engine limit the engine life? E.g. A vRS TDI PD remapped to 205BHP, would the engine 'wear' quicker?

Thanks

Andrew

If you thrash it and make the utmost to feel the extra power all the time then yes. Drive it as you would a standard car and treat it the same way (fast drives, slow drives etc) then you'll be fine! :)

I had my previous Petrol TFSi vRS running 270bhp & 300lb/ft and that was still going strong at 67k miles when i sold it. I bought it new and mapped it at around 4k miles.

As long as you look after it a bit better than a normal car, i.e more regular oil changes with the correct spec oil, the correct grade fuel for the map etc then you will be fine

PD140 DSG, remapped from new. In a couple of weeks it will pass the 400,000kms mark. If the map is from a trusted company and you service the vehicle as per schedule(or a little better) you should be fine.

I wouldn't say the engine would really have any issues. It's more likley the turbo, clutch, brakes, drivetrain that takes the brunt of the extra power. But as people have already said, if you treat the car well then it's not a big deal. Just try and have a bit of mechanical sympathy, which you should always have to extend the working life of components.

Had a number of remapped cars and never had any issues.

Agree with Carl, my Tfsi is at 280bhp 320ftlb @104 000 miles. Obviously a remap will stress the components more particually the turbo but if run correctly and not thrashed from cold it should be fine.

More frequent oil changes should help keep wear and tear at bay.

As the above have correctly stated, if you drive it hard even in standard form you will wear the engine out quicker. Most remaps dont put too much extra stress on the engine and are well within the safe working tolerances for the engine. I change my oil every 5000 miles and never have any issues....famous last words though lol Though if you go big power then expect the odd failure or running issue. But then thats the risk we take when modifying B)
