Checking oil and which grade ?

Featured Replies

Hi not sure if you are supposed to check oil with the engine hot or cold ? :wonder:

And what type of oil are people using for both normal and variable services , brand grade etc ? :wonder:

All VAG engines fitted with a DPF have to use VW507.00 spec. oil in them.

I have used Fuchs before but in reality anything meeting the correct VW spec will be fine.

Check engine oil level when the engine is cold, as the oil would have drained back down into the oil sump over time, (ie overnight)

I saw the results of using the incorrect oil with a DPF in a Mazda, the bill was eye watering for replacing the DPF and sensors, more expensive than a Skoda. The car had been serviced on time and kilometers but the owner had been told by the workshop servicing it that oils were oils and it did not matter. He saved in servicing costs but it bit him in the end.

I have used Fuchs, Castrol and Shell Longlife oils complying to 506.01 and 507.00 in my non-DPF 1.9Tdi. 507.00 is the correct choice for a DPF equipped Superb.

From experience, I can wholeheartedly recommend Opie Oils for both product knowledge, price and service. If you sign up (free of charge) you will be entitled to a members discount and special offers. I have no affiliation to Opie Oils, but have bought from them for the past 5 years:-

Because Amazon know nothing about oil, whereas, Simon & Guy at Opie Oils can provide invaluable advice, particularly beneficial if you own a vehicle which is out of the ordinary ie, vintage or modified.

If you bulk buy enough oil for 2 or 3 oil changes you will benefit from free delivery. Opie Oils members price for 4 litres of Castrol Edge is currently £35.15. Spending £75 qualifies for free delivery, therefore, if you bought 12 litres you'd save £7.65 over Amazon.

Castrol Edge 5/30 504.00/507.00 spec is £35.00 for 4 ltr at asda.

If anyone is interested, I bought 25 Ltr drum of Morris 507 oil off Ebay for less than £100 delivered. A good deal I thought.

You're obviously planning to keep your existing car a long time! Yes, a good deal.

Four oil changes worth, plus I have other vehicles that can use it.
