mk 1 vrs camblet kit ecp or genuine

Featured Replies

Hi i am planning on doing my cambelt on my mk1 vrs next month so i am just collecting the bits,i already have the metal waterpump, but this is where i am stumped.

does anyone know whats the difference is between the ECP kit and the genuine kit?

i work in the trade so can get the genuine kit for £58+vat and looking on Erwin can see what comes with it but ECP want £85(Before haggling but i doubt i wil get £30 off) for theirs so what im wondering is included in theirs?

also i have searched and got conflicting info what else should i change i read possibly engine mount bolts?

many thanks

I will be watching closely to the replys you get, I have a mk1 vrs, i bought the car with no histoy it has 95k on the clock, its been on my mind alot to get the belt and water pump done. I myself am pretty good with a spanner but a little worried that it might be to much of a big job for myself to do, fingers crossed I will see what answers you recieve

Use a genuine kit plus water pump, metal ones are not a good idea, if they seize they will break the cambelt, modified plastic is the better choice.

the only thing our kit doesnt come with is the hydraulic damper/tensioner which some people change, then again i doubt the aftermarket kit will come with it either

You must change the engine bolts.

you'd be suprised how many dont change the mount bolts, we sell on average 3-4 kits a day and you might get 1 ask for the engine mount bolts

Not surprised.

Whilst my car was under warranty, it was serviced by a Skoda dealer who changed the cambelt without changing the bolts. On a trip to Scotland they worked loose and snapped off part of the block as the bolts came out. In the end the dealer had to change the short engine and a whole bunch of other stuff.
