What am I doing wrong?

Featured Replies

Hi all, hope someone can help. I'm just an average joe who likes a clean car.

Decided to try my hand at polishing and waxing.

Used T-Cut metallic polish on my black magic octy followed by Wicked Wax.

Not the greatest products I know but didn't look very good after i'd done it.

I worked in the shade and applied polish in 2 foot squares before vigourosly buffing off with a microfibre towel as per instructions.

Applied the wicked wax and buffed off as per instructions but didn't get the nice shiny finish I was hoping for.

Ended up using my old trusty turtle wax Ice but this doesn't last very long.

Advice welcome, thanks :)

A good machine polish with Menzerna followed by some Zaino products..... works for me B) (happy to help if required.... for a decent price ;))

Our resident expert, Baker21, may have a different idea or 10 :smirk:

I have been adviced by a high ranking detailer that menzerna will be the best polish, r222 for the glaze and PB EX-P for the sealent or go Black fire if I want to spend that money.

I am currently cutting mine back with 3m polishes and Chemical guy pads. Then r222 and poor boys. Will post pics when it is done. Let me rephrase that... when the weather stops being broken.

DONT USE T-CUT!!!

It will damage your paint!!

It was originally formutated to remove oxidation from knackered Cellulose paint NOT todays acryllic paint....I'd start again with a 'proper' polish as described and throw the T-Cut in the bin

Chris has made the main key point here, T-Cut is very aggressive and by using this you will have more than likely damaged the lacquer and made the final finish look a lot duller and hazy?

The problem is that some products on the market are well targeted to the people that are 'bridging' the cleaning / detailing sector and T-Cut is one of them, it will do a job in some degree but it will not be good enough for that person looking to take the car to the next level.

You may be able to get away with claying the car and then using something like AG SRP and then a wax over the top but I think if you have used T-Cut you may need to get the car machine polishing to bring back the gloss and shine in the lacquer.......... :(

He has used the metallic polish and not the cutting compound so should be ok with the paintwork!

I would be using t-cut in 2" squares rather than 2 foot lol. It would have left hazzing, best get a da on it to refine it.

In my eyes, Tcut has only ever been good for getting scuff marks off. I once used it to try and do my car and it marred it beyond anything you have ever seen! It has taken me ages to get it popping again and I am still not finished! (months mainly down to the weather and money)

The new metallic TCut is fine for modern paints, it's the classic which will eat into it.

FWIW though, no it's not a great polish.

By hand I'd probably go for AutoGlym Super Resin Polish or stages 1 and 2 from megs 3 stage system.

I'd then follow this up with a nice sealant or if you want the waxy look (which I do like) a nice hard wax such as colly 476 or if you want it all from the shops AG HD wax.

I hope I havn't damaged the laquer! :( In fact the only dull area is the small area I applied the Wicked Wax to after the T-cut metallic polish???, so hopefully not. And I also did not leave on for very long before rubbing off...

But thanks all for the advice, seems it's my choice in product that is my downfall.
