Best petrol engine?

Hi, I am currently fed up with the poor reliability of modern diesels (DMF etc) and am seriously thinking of ditching my current car (Vectra SRi CDTi) for a petrol Superb. Looking at cars I see Superbs with a very small engine (1.4TSI). The BHP seems quite good but is this engine really any good in a car the size of a Superb?

I Dont where you get the poor reliability of diesels from my last 5 cars have been PX'd with a min of 140K on them (in 3 years of use) and not one has let me down and same for the other cars i have on the fleet. With the filters etc that are now being fitted to keep the bunny huggers happy it has made a diesel less of an option if you only use the car for short journies, but if you do a reasonable milage then diesel everytime

It is the Dual Mass Flywheels. From everything I have experienced it is not a matter of if they fail but when. Then when they go it costs over £1000 to fix as they insist on the clutch being done as well. Then there are the bunny bugger stuff that tends to get sooted up etc. Add to that diesel being 5 to 6p a litre dearer than unleaded, the diesel car being significantly more expensive to buy, service and keep in tyres and I just don't think even my 20K miles per year make a diesel worth it. I have had two of them do this to me in a row. At least the Ford had 80K on the clock, the vectra has only 45K. None of the petrol cars I have owned were anything like as expensive to run despite using more fuel. The diesels never do anything like the claimed MPG as they claim. The Mondeo did about 40MPG and the Vectra is doing about 42MPG. My last petrol car, a 1999 Octavia 1.6 75bhp did about 38mpg. There is a mechanic on the Vectra C forum who says he would not touch a modern diesel with a barge pole because of the DMF etc.

Get what you want, if you dont want a diesel, get a petrol, it's your choice and don't forget the best deals are on the petrol's and the waits are less too.

Another point I shall make is "Economy" is not the only reason to get a diesel, I got my 170 for the performance too, it makes the same Tq as the 3.6 V6!

PS. Its DPF.

I wouldn't buy a diesel based on performance... Yes they have a lot of tq, but in what range?

I have the 2.0 TSI and I have no problem eating diesels for breakfast :)

Of course right where you need it, where else? ;) No need to wait for the engine to rev up and find its tq...

I have an Octavia estate with this engine, it lugs it around no problems, went to Glasgow couple of weeks ago with 4 up and half of Ikea in the boot on the way back, got to and held national speed limit uphill and down dale all the way.

Have a test drive, it will surprise you.

Thanks for the replies. Just noticed what I had typed (or at least what my iPad had autocorrected. What I wanted to say was bunny hugger not bunny bugger :). I am having some trouble finding a dealer with a 1.4TSI engined Superb in stock to allow me to test drive it. All they seem to have are 1.9 and 2.0 TDi versions. Would be reluctant to order a new car with no idea how it feels to drive, so normally I test a used version first.

As for the diesel v petrol, I actually like the way a turbo diesel drives. My Vectra is easily fast enough for me at 150bhp, and in truth even my Mondeo at 115bhp was powerful enough for my driving style. It is the fact that both diesels I have owned have cost me too much in garage bills that is making me look to petrol again.

Agree about diesel problems, the injector pump went on my Audi AllRoad, £1500 plus fitting plus new cambelt total cost over £2500!!!!!!!!

Ok so Audi had 115k miles on clock, but my work Merc S Class with only 44,000 miles has had 3 glow plugs at over £250 each (fitted) and a new timing chain at about £2K!!!!! Lucky its a lease car. Add to that an average fuel consumption of just 21mpg (Ok 90% in London traffic) makes my Superb look good.

Love my V6, smooth quiet but with a great, if muted growl. Add an average of 28mpg and I am happy.
