Instrument Accuracy

Featured Replies

Whilst im quite impressed with my octy 2 pd, previous was a Passat 130.

I find that the inaccuracy of the fuel computer is so far out as to be a waste

of what should be a useful aid.

It records trip mpg at around 65/70, cumulative records state 63 mpg,my

fill to fill by pc records are 53mpg in line with claimed Skoda figures .

The range when full shows a 875 mile possibility from a 55 litre tank!.and the

fuel gauge drops like a stone when below the halfway mark.

Can anyone throw any light on this, anyone one with similar problems?

I do not have any experience with this part of things but I am very interested in the post. My new 2.0 diesel is due soon and the main selling point was mpg. I would like (and expect) the car computer to be accurate when it comes to the trip mpg etc.

Tosh, when you say the guage drops like a stone below the half way mark can you expand on that a little?

The trip computer on my A4 was a bit like that. When in slow moving traffic it showed a high mpg because I wasnt pressing hard on the throttle - when clearly I was more in gpm than mpg teritory.

Seem more accurate on long trips - but around town it was a bit flaky.

The accuracy or otherwise of the trip computer has no effect on the car's mpg, so stop worrying. The trip mpg on my 4X4 over-reads by about 2 mpg - or 7% - but it's only a reading. The speedo will probably over-read too.

That sounds like it's a lot worse than the old octy , and is probably faulty.

Mine overreads by about 4% but it's consistent in doing that and the estimated range is always pretty good.

When tank is full there is very little movement on gauge ,giving the impression

of a high mpg to expect,as it lowers below half it it is not relevant to the mileage done ,on a long trip believing there is plenty left ,you realise that you better fill up to be on the safe side after seeing the needle falling rapidly.and checking the range after 50 miles into the trip you notice that 100+ miles has disappeared .i now make sure i fill up when below half full.as my dealer is a distance away im leaving it until more convenient for me,as i say its not a problem as such but i dont want a 20% innacuracy to live with as its a new car .i get 53/55 mpg brim to brim so im happy with that.

Wait till you go above 45 MPH :thumbup::thumbup:

Well I find mine to be accurate to your calculated figures. On a run down to Taunton last week in medium/light traffic at a GPS cruise of 78mph where possible I got 53mpg.

On my run home of an evening which is a mix of heavy traffic and then open motorway I get an avg of 48.6mpg.

I've filled up when the range computer read zero miles and brimmed it with 54 litres on a 54 litre tank so everything looks ok to me. although I have to confess I was expecting the economy to be slightly better than it is. It may improve with age though.

You need to keep a manual record of total fuel used and mileage to get anything approaching an accurate mpg figure. Each time I fill up I calculate mpg since last filled and overall. Best figure for a tank is 33.71mpg and overall mpg is 31.43 for 11658 miles driven. The time before last when I filled up mpg worked out at 40.01 - a nonsense as I had been doing short journeys. The next fill produced an mpg for both tankfuls combined of 31.05mpg. I don't bother with trip mpg any more other than as a rough guide.
