Help Me Choose

Featured Replies

I've been reading through the forums and would be interested to find out some opinions.

I'm buying a Superb 2 to use for airport transfers covering 600 miles a week on average.

The driving will be 75% motorways - I don't do regular taxi work so no short runs or stop/start driving.

Budget wise I have £13.5K to spend. It seem my choices are either :

58/09 2.0tdi PD/CR s 6 speed with anything up to 30k miles

10/11 1.9Tdi se 5 speed

Some questions:

How does the gearing compare between the 5 & 6 speed?

Will I miss the extra gear on motorway driving?

Will I miss the cruise control if I get s spec?

The official figures show the 1.9tdi has better MPG - what about in the real world?

Thanks for any feedback

I can't answer all your questions but for the mileage you will be doing (or indeed what I do - half that) I wouldn't be without cruise control.

Yep - cruise is a big issue. I'm assuming this will be a big help with MPG as well.

Go for 2 CR

Get 6 box

For sure cruise

Forget mpg and enjoy

Forget official MPG figures if you search on the forum you will find many posts on economy again take with pinch of salt. The number of variables to try and get mpg figures is inumerable, humidity, altitude, road surface, tyres, tyre pressures, traffic, manual box, auto box, sdg box, right foot, fuel the list goes on. I had a 2.0 170CR Superb Elegance Hatch with DSG averaged over 18 months all types of roads in UK 45mpg, now have the 2.0 170CR Superb Combi manual average over 8 months 48mpg. I do not drive for economy just to get from a to b as quick and safe as possible. If I wanted economy I would not have kept to Skoda Superbs.

CR 140 didn't arrive until mid 2010 - they were all PD's before this...

CR 170 has been around for a while, and is a cracking engine, tho no where near as economical as the 1.9

If you want a reliable, economical car which should be good for 250,000+ miles you might like to consider something similiar to my 3 year Superb which will have circa 100,000 miles when it is replaced with a Greenline Combi in 5-6 months time.

Your specific questions are answered below. I have also added a few additional points in favour of the Superb 1.9Tdi.

1) The 5 speed Greenline II is a great combination with the 1.6Tdi CR. By comparison, driving the 6 speed Passat involves far more gear changing.

2) The 5 speed is adequate and with the slightly higher fifth gear ratios means you hardly ever have to drop a cog when driving on motorways or dual carriageways. The 5 speed Greenline II is a great combination with the 1.6Tdi CR. By comparison, driving the 6 speed Passat involves far more gear changing.

3) In my opinion, cruise is an essential extra on S spec models. I added this to my own S spec superb and it was money well spent.

4) My remapped 1.9Tdi is currently achieving an average (full-empty-full) of 56.90mpg, compared against the published combined figure of 49.6mpg.

5) Another advantage of buying a Superb 1.9Tdi (non-Greenline) is the absence of a DPF.

6) The Superb hatchback's cavernous boot is ideal for taxi use. Dropping the rear seat backs gives even more luggage space.

Thanks for the replies. It looks like my local main dealer has a june 09 1.9 tdi 5 speed se with 11k miles.

This could be ideal. It's listed as having climate control and cruise so fits the bill.

Would i be right to opt for a fixed servicing schedule?

What radio would be fitted to a 2009 se ?

And will it pair up to a mobile phone as part of the radio option?

Again, another partial answer for you, but I'd suggest variable service intervals are much less expensive. If your doing airport runs you won't be working the engine hard (which can reduce the mileage between sevices on the variable service system by 1000's) so on variable you should get 17-18000 miles between services if you are careful. Or in other words about every 30 weeks for what you're doing. On fixed service intervals that would need doing every 20 weeks. It would cost you a lot more on fixed.

Variable servicing will be more cost effective in view of your estimated annual mileage.

The Bolero touchscreen multiplay/MP3 unit is fitted to SE models. I don't believe it has Bluetooth functionality unless the previous owner opted for this feature.

Check whether you have a full size spare wheel as there was a change to a space saver sometime around 2009/2010.

I went to have a look at a 1.9tdi SE today. Considering it only had 11k miles on it it was a bit of a let down.

The wheels in the advert on the skoda website were not the ones fitted when I arrived, the pic was not a libary pic either.

The rear bumper was a mess - it had been resprayed and had 'orange peel' finish.

The salesman told me he would have the rear bumper painted & he would find out about the wheels.

Not good enough I'm afraid. The dealer in question was the one nearest to Cheshire Oaks.

The car has been on the skoda website for over 3 weeks now - wonder why!

So off to another dealer to look at a 2.0Tdi CR s tomorrow.
