Coolant temp sensor will have failed. Very common problem. Get a genuine VAG part £25ish.

Easy install too....

hi i have a similar problem temp gauge sometimes works and other times does, nt

where is the sensor octavia mark 1 1999.... :wonder:

Follow the top hose from the rad, & the CTS is located at the end of the hose close to the engine block. It's held into it's housing by a C clip. Make sure you get the revised green CTS & a new O ring. Easy 5 min job to replace. In my experience the best thing to do is leave the header tank cap on, & the CTS connector on. Fit the new O ring to the new CTS, & have it ready to put in quickly when removing the old CTS, this keeps coolant loss to a minimum. Then disconnect the connector off the old CTS & refit to the new one in situ. Top up the coolant, job done.

thanks for above done it on my octavia 1900tdi '04 today sorted! would add be useful to have rag ready for changeover to hold over hole to slow flow of coolant and be prepared to fish out o ring which stayed in hole. also note catch to release connector is at rear and innacessible.....if i'd read the above properly& the CTS connector on i'd have saved a gouged thumb by disconnecting in situ doh! still fixed now thanks again! :)
