1.6 TDI noise?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have just recently taken delivery of my new Monte Carlo 1.6 TDI 75PS and I have noticed that it's making a strange noise. When I set off in 1st, the revs increase and as soon as I depress the clutch to change gear there's a weird rattle/rumbling noise as the revs come down then it will do it again going from 2nd to 3rd but a bit quieter. Does anyone know what this is, or has anyone heard this before?? Help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hello Bounce, it's difficult to know if what you are describing is a normal diesel noise or an abnormal one. We need a better description or a sound file. Question: is this your first diesel? If so, you may not be used to the slightly more predominant diesel engine noises you get at low revs/speed when moving off. There is a tendency to either over rev, or under rev a diesel when driving one for the first few times if you are not used to one. Under revving it will produce mechanical noises not normally associated with normal driving. It takes a while to get to know how best to drive them. My 1422cc TDI PD engine makes various rattling, clunking noises at very low revs during moving off/acceleration and decel that are not there if you drive it like it should be driven. That said, the 1.6cr is very refined and quiet so in the absence of a sound file, I would advise going to your dealer or letting a friend who knows about diesels come out with you to confirm what may be going on. Keep posting on this one if you can please. Good luck.

Hello Estate Man hppe I find you well, I have the same engine as yours I have done a service and seems to be running well, what kind of mileage will you get out of your 3 pot? on a full tank,I reckon I am going to get about 550 miles on a tank full is this about the norm or should I be getting more? emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Hello Seb my friend. Yes...I'm nearly fully recovered now thanks. Latest brain scan is due next week, if that's clear I'm good to go. Doc says to keep me away from any petrol, matches and sharp objects!!!...and everything will be fine!!! :D:D Seriously though, I'm even back working part time at the moment with all my projects and Essex County Council has taken me back again on a part time as I want to work basis (they had to let me go when I got sick).

Yes, your fuel consumption sounds about right when talking about miles per tankful. Mine is only slightly more. We do mostly town and urban driving at the moment and the car is averaging between 55-58mpg all the time. We live in North Essex which is flat as a pancake compared to where you live. We went on a fairly lengthy trip to a country restauarant a couple of weekends ago with four of us in the car and keeping to 65mph where possible, returned 62mpg on a round trip cross country run of 86 miles. I was ok with that since our last petrol car, a new 1300cc fiat Punto could only manage 38mpg in near exactly the same circumstances. My best ever earlier this year was 76mpg in fourth gear on a cross country run. Couldn't go fast enough to comfortably take 5th. That's a big saving. Congrates on servicing yours yourself...it's easier than people think isn't it! Speak soon mate.

Sorry Bounce if we bumped your thread for a moment!

When I first got my 1.6TDi, i noticed tht the engine kind of growled when I changed gear. Maybe its that noise thaat you are hearing? Now that my car has done over 10000miles, it is not so noticable. Maybe it is a running in kind of sound but Im no mechanic! :giggle:

I would think its unlikely to be a failure!! Well I should bloody well hope not!!!:thumbdown: Enjoy the car as the engine is magnificent!!:thumbup:

sounds like a losse/rattly heat sheild to me :)
