Problem with large radiator fan

Featured Replies

I currently have a problem with the large radiator fan not working. I found this out when the car started overheating after being left running for 5 minutes and the air con was not blowing cold air. The small fan still works but the large one doesn't.

I have seen a few posts about the fuse melting and the resistor blowing. I have checked the fuse and this is fine. I am thinking in may be that the resistor has blown which I believe will be a whole new fan unit.

The only thing that has got me worried is reading this post about the resistor possibly blowing again?

There are not many topics about this on briskoda but appear to be a lot more common on the VW forums.

Has anybody else had this sort of problem and if so what was the fix?

Cheers

I just replaced my one not so long ago as it wasn't spinning. Got one from a mk4 golf swapped them over and now both fans spin again :) . Quite fiddly to do though.

go for the non-OE's, as the OE fans are crap and fail a lot. you'll need a whole fan unit. replaced mine about 2 weeks ago. 30 min job considering all the rust on the screws...

Ok thanks where did you get your non OE fan from?

regular tp dealer, they'll surely know about the originals failing and will sell you an aftermarket one. payed for mine ~65 euro. you'll notice it's heavier than the original

NOTE: do not use aircon if that fan is not working id will strain aircon system and you will loose aircon fluid

It is probably the fan that has gone as others have said

I had a similar problem but both fans did not work, which initially i thought was the fan control unit under battery. Spare one from a known working car confirmed that was not the problem. The problem was a dry joint on the top fuse box. Those top 3 green fuses control alternator, cooling fans and ABS. The second fuse although not broken to the eye, must of had a hairline crack. I replaced it and fans started working again. This fixed my issue.

There are many topics on this on the Golf forums, which the fans on the aircon models are the same.

I dont know where you are based but I have the full rad and fans available. PM me if you need any more info. I'm in Sheffield.
