VRS Coolant pump

Featured Replies

Just been flicking through a VW PDF document (Self study program 359.), and noticed an additional coolant pump "V50",to circulate coolant around the turbo after shut down, for upto 15 minutes according to the PDF. Mine has got pretty hot on a couple of occasions, but I've never noticed anything running on after shut down - maybe it's just fairly quiet.Does seem to get very hot under the bonnet.Think I would feel better switching off at the motorway services without letting it idle for 30 seconds (Allways done this with turbo's - overkill on my part I know.)if I knew this little pump was doing its job.Anybody noticed anything running after switch off ?.

like you I have got into the habbit of running the last few miles before I stop gently, so I have not heard it... would take alot of effort on my behalf to turn it off straight after a hard thrash?!?

anyone else heard evidance of this pump running on their cars?

I also warm up and cool down before and after spirited driving. I've herd what sounds like a pump when car is turned off but it stops once the key is removed. Does anyone get a sort of popping noise when turning off??

On my vRS you do hear some what I would describe as electronic type noises once key is removed and you get out the car. I suppose it could be a high pitched whirring/pumping noise.

Does this help ?

The pump is down the front of the engine by the sump so you ould be lucky to hear it running.

If you kneel down in front of the grill you should hear a very faint hum

I'll stick my head down by the grille tonight when I get home from work. The neighbours allready think I'm crackers for washing/polishing it every week !!.

I'll be listening out for this when (or 'if' if the waiting time is to be believed) I take delivery.

If I remember correctly, a lot of Renaults used to have (not sure if they still do) a separate electric coolant pump that ran after engine shutdown to stop hotspots and heat damage. You could hear them quite clearly 'back in the day'!
