clutch noise

Featured Replies

hello,

any idea where the problem might be if i have a constant whir/whine/noise when moving at 40+ or so that goes away when the clutch is depressed and is most noticable on overrun?

i've suspected the gearbox for ages but two oil changes have given no evidence of anything falling off.

if it helps the gear change is a bit ropey and first is occasionally very hard to engage but other times perfect (alignment problem wrecking a clutch bearing perhaps? i don't know)

any ideas?

also, my drivers side caliper has a split in its boot (only small) is it ever worth not buying a new one given its noticably taken on grit?

cheers

toby

Mine whirs a bit when on the overrun - I presume it is something to do with loading the diff the wrong way round perhaps (wheels driving engine). Mines sometimes a bit notchy too in first and reverse - I'm going to change my gearbox oil at the next oil change and see how it goes.

I did read on here or SCN maybe that the diff oil is separate to the main gear oil - Is this true? I seem to remember the guy draining the normal gear oil, then draining something else. Either that or it was an auto box?

Input shaft bearing? How many miles has it done?

don't know as the engine was replaced before i bought it after the owner tried to run it without any oil. there is no evidence that the clutch was changed though - everything else is quite well documented so i guess its a no.

the engine pulls fine, uses no oil and behaves otherwise fine so i thought it might be a bearing given the noise.

i replaced the throwout bearing using the guides here as it seemed the cheapest relevant possibilty

end cap was part number (for DUU 02K box) : 02K 141 073

bearing was: 020 141 165 G

and it made no difference. the bearing that came out was fine and the noise is still there

so, does this more or less point to having the 'box removed whatever? and how interchangable were other gearboxes with the 1.6 engine given DUUs are silly price and made of cheese?
