Air/ pollen filter change

Featured Replies

Just recently had my cambelt and pump changed which wasn't cheap and now it needs an oil and filters change.

Is there a guide on here on how to replace the pollen and air filters because the basic service has been quoted at £120 just oil etc but the full service including pollen and air filter is £190.

So if I splash out £30 on air and pollen filters, I could save £40

Just want to know if it's worth the £40 saving by doing it myself dependant on the complexity.

Any comments welcome.

Its sooo easy mate, is your the petrol version?

Pollen filter is in the passenger footwell look up you will see some black foam pull that back and you will see a cover slide it to the right remove filter taking note of how it came out and replace the new one.

Just looked and pollen filter is easy to find. The air filter is even easier!

Thanks Grizzle!!

Ah the air filter is simple mate I have the petrol and it's a bitch lol complete silly design, glad you got it sorted saves a few pennies especially in this current climate.

Yeah it was surprisingly easy to find and remove with your help. Thought I'd have to remove the engine, take 14 panels off, disconnect the front and rear bumpers and saw the roof off..... Well that's what I almost had to do when i replaced light bulbs in my Audi.

Thanks Again mate. I owe you a pint if you ever pass Doncaster

Final question:

Bosch Air Filter - £13.14

or

Guttmann Air Filter - £11.28

or

Any other for a diesel 2.0 VRS

Personally i use MAAN filters, i changed the oil in the car on friday it had a FRAM filter going by the service book was done January this year quite glad i did change it as the filter has started to fall apart.

I got one of these for my petrol vRS - pollen filter - original VAG OEM at a bargain price, next day delivery and good communication (sent chassis number first to ensure it would fit and got quick email back), have just fitted it and it was easy if a bit awkward down there. Old one (that was identical to the replacement) was really heavy as it was full of bits and came out almost black.

My best tip is to put the two retaining thumb screws for the footwell top cover somewhere safe when you take them out, have a torch ready, and remember to slide off the rectangular panel that keeps the filter in rather than pull it! The old filter will just drop down when you slide the panel off (worth having newspaper to catch it and the bits that come out with it ready to catch it underneath!). Given how easy (and cheap) it was to do this job I think I'll be termpted to put a new one in every year rather than every two as recommended in the service manual.

Oh, and as a ps, I also got a new air filter (pipercross for a bargain £17 half price, so not much more than a OEM paper one from the dealer I got the pollen filter from), not yet fitted it (it's peeing down here!) and it looks a little bit more complicated, but everyone says it's easy enough - there is a good 'how to' here with useful pics - replacing air filter

So back to the OP, yes, it certainly is possible to save yourself money on the service with easy diy stuff

Thanks for your help guys. I picked the car up from the garage today and felt great only paying £120.

I'll certainly replace the pollen and air filter yearly myself now which will save me a few quid.

Don't think I would ever be brave enough to do an oil change though.....

Cheers again!!
