Dump valve

Dump valve/recurc valve

Are these the same thing?

Do they do anything to aid the engine?

And have been told they do nothin on a diesel

Worth getting? I love the sound lol

And pleaseeee note I'm 20 years old, no oldies taking the michael:)

They're both "overboost pressure relief valves", but they work differently. A "dump valve" (also known as a wastegate) relases excess boost pressure to atmosphere (or at least into the exhaust system). However that doesn't matter to VAG owners, because VAG engine designs only work with recirc valves anyway.

They don't do a whole lot more than make the engine noisier, which might be a disadvantage for you, since young guy plus noisy exhaust can attract ice-cream men like **** attracts flies.

Even more of a reason to get one fitted :p yum

"Ice-cream man" is local slang for traffic plod. If you want sarcasm lessons and a free MOT while you wait every day...

I'm fully aware. Fair point

I thought the wastegate was different to a dump valve as the wastegate releases air on the exhaust side of the turbo not the compressor side as with a dump/diverter valve? But as Ken says, a dump and diverter valve are technically the same thing except one 'dumps' excess boost and the over diverters (recirculates), I pressume if you are mentioning diseasel you have a Furby vRS?

If you have a petrol vRS then you can fit a Forge spacer to convert the boring old quiet DV into a screaming hill-billy plod attraction device, the other alternative is the fit an exhaust whistler........ :dull:

Hopefully a furby vrs diesel as soon I can shift my astra

Just getting a sort of wish list together lol

I would save you pennies for performance mods, remap, downpipe etc.

Will keep you in mind mate cheers

Gotta get the car first tho (n)

You almost got it right ken o, a dump valve is a vacuum operated bypass valve essentially, when the throttle plate snaps shut that manifold vacuum acts on a diaphragm which allows boosted air to escape the intake ducting to prevent the turbo compressor from stalling and allows the turbine to maintain as much speed as possible and therefore reduces future pickup time to full boost. without a dump valve the pressure build up would force the turbo to stop spinning abruptly and would shorten the life of the turbo by a huge factor. A recirculating valve effectively has the same function except that rather than venting boost to the atmosphere it pushes the air back into the air box (or somewhere on the non- pressurised side of the turbo.) if you are hard core you can just simply remove the recirc pipe from the intake ducting as plug the hole and it will hiss like a normal atmospheric valve but I don't recommend it tbh..

Don't confuse the bypass/dump valve with the waste gate. The wastegate diverts a portion of the exhaust gas away from the exhaust turbine to regulate the speed/pressure of the turbo

All this is kind of irrelevant on a fabia vrs anyway becaue they don't have a normal wastegate as they use a vnt turbocharger... Plus more importantly a diesel engine doesn't need a dump valve or bypass valve or whTever you want to call it, there is no throttle plate on a diesel engine so there is no need to dump excess boost pressure per se

So does this mean its impossible to fit one to a furby vrs?

Or you can fit one but doesn't serve a purpose?

I had one, can be fitted easily, sounds cool, but has no performance advantages.

infact, I've swapped it all out for hard piping now, so it's sat on the floor doing nothing.

first dibs if u sell

Wait til I get a vrs first tho lol

Gta push my astra for a sale baaadly

So what I said but a more suitable entry into Wikipedia than mine.......

If you fit an ordinary dump valve it will not work at all (diesel has no throttle valve as explained in posts above). You can fit a solenoid operated dump valve to the car, however this will only make a noise, it will not do anything to the performance, I have even read that you may loose performance with it.

mine was slower tbh Jim, got bored of it rather quickly.

I had a dash mounted missile switch that operated the solenoid seperately, so that it could be turned off and on.

still pointless but cool, for a bit!
