Hi all just want to know about variable servicing I got the car last may and Ive checked my service book today after getting 2 quotes for a full service. Because I thought that after 12 months + then I should arrange for it to be serviced Ive looked through the threads on the subject but I'm getting lost cheers

Variable is upto 2 years or upto 18k - the car will tell you when it needs a service.

If the car hasnt asked for one yet, then it is likely set for longlife servicing. What mileage have you done?

Variable servicing will give you up to just under 19,000 miles bewteen services, depending on the types of journeys and driving style. The service spanner appears to warn you when the service is due.

51k in total when we bought the car it was on 40k had the cambelt done in september after throwing my dummy out of the pram

19000 miles? I got 20000 on both occasions before the car requested a service. Services done at 20000 and 40000, now done 58500 and no sign of the next service yet.

Yeah I thought it was up to 30k on diesel and 20k on petrol. I know my mate once got 24k out of his pd.

Variable servicing means that you will never quite know when the bl***ming thing needs servicing until the spanner and service warning appears, this is almost guaranteed to happen when you are short of money. It is a great idea for drivers clocking up high annual mileage but I have gone back to old fashioned fixed intervals so at least I can guestimate when a service will be due

You can check, key in and turn to position II so it show the battery light etc dont start then push in and hold the trip button it will show miles and days.

Same here - mine just passed 17,000 miles yesterday, and the maxidot is saying a service will be required in 1700 miles - I wonder if 18,700 miles is a preset mileage for a particular driving style ?

P.S. Just picked up a VW Passat 2.0 Tdi Bluemotion hire car for a business trip tomorrow - it has done 4,200 miles, and computer says service due in 14,500 miles. Another 18,700 mile'r ! :wonder:

This is interesting!!! I have checked the service interval at which mine is set and it does show 9700 miles. I have just replaced oil and oil filter for it's intermediate service,this time I have started using the 5W-40 Quantum Platinum oil,recommended for PD engines ,while previously I have used the 5W-30 Mobile 1 ESP version,and still,the interval at which the service spanner will appear is the same.

Any ideas,suggestions?

PS: I have done 195786 miles on it now

HHave you been resetting the service reminder each time? Sounds like you are, or your car isn't set for variable.

Its been services every 10000 miles as standard, for the last 100000 miles and at 20000 miles for the first 100000 miles.

I have just looked up on the information supplied by the manufacturer,which refers to oil service intervals, and I am even more confused now. As it says, a variable interval service will be anywhere between 9000-30000 miles and a fixed interval service will be around 10000. Now, I have just replaced the oil type with a new one of higher viscosity and checked the next due service on the on-board computer , and the result is 9700 miles.

Anyone has any ideas?

If you're on variable you don't need interval services. VAG don't do or schedule them.

Based on what you've said someone has reset the car to fixed regime via the dash reset. You cannot reset variable services without a dealer tool or vcds.
