Potential gear box issues - advice please.

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I recently refurbed and painted my wheels, whilst they where off I took all the wheel weights off. I planned to get them re-balanced once I was done, but they seemed fine, infact more balanced than they did before. But the down side is that there is a very low speed knock, but it seems to sound like it is on a full rotation of the wheel, but the faster you go it disapears.

I had my dad in the car and he seems to reckon it is my gear box that is doing that. It seems fine, doesn't struggle to get in gear or anything. Because he had me worried I was sat in traffic listening to all the different sounds coming from my car.

As I put the clutch down and back up, I can hear the cable moving, so I am guessing that is dry?

Also when I had the clutch down I could feel vibrations in it, but that could have been the sub. I stupidly didn't turn the music off and check

When it is in any gear it seems to beable to move quite a bit (side to side).

Does this sound like and issue?

If it is, how much are we talking and what are my options?

Do I go OEM? If so, what price?

Do I upgrade? If so, what price?

Do I go 6 gears? If so, what price?

My dad seems to think that the diff is part of the gearbox and if I get a new box it should be included? Is that true, because I don't think that is right for the octy.

Thanks for any help you can give.

There is no clutch cable as it's hydrolic. It's proberly the pedal you can hear, mine squeeks now n then

Moving the gearstick side to side isn't a problem as it uses cables and rods.

I'd get your wheels balanced first to see if that solves your problem.

Yes, the diff is inside the gearbox.

Turn your sub off before trying to identify any noise based issue

Don't worry, I will do lol. Just he said it today and I have been trecking around allday so its had me paniced.

So when you hear about the diff going an its costs X amount of money, are people buying a new dif or a new gearbox?

Somehow with your discription i doubt it;s the diff

If i'm wrong and the diff is showing signs of packing up, i think i read somewhere that the rivits fail and can be replaced with bolts. Might of just made that up but someone will confirm it i'm sure lol

If the diff has lost some teeth, the cost of paying someone to split the gearbox and installed a new diff works more expensive than buying a 2nd hand gearbox due to labour

Only worth doing if you have a special/rare gearbox, or decided to installed an uprated diff, which tends to cost $$

I've lost count of the number of times I've thought that something isknocking, only for the noise to disappear when I've turned the stero down :D

Damn me an unquenchable thirst for bass!

Will need to turn the speakers down tomorrow then.

Thanks all for the advice.

Is it worth swapping to the 6 speed box? Because there is a cupra down the scrappers that I could potentially get the box from if it is worth it?

There's quite alot of bits to change - driveshafts, and a whole bunch or smaller bits

In use, the standard petrol 6spd O2M has much closer ratio's than the O2J, but with a longer ratio'd final drive - this basically means more gear changes

The O2M is also 30Kg heavier, so if you're on OE suspension it'll make the front end a bit more soggy.

The 6spd is a good option if going more power ( the O2J is rated to about 300nm of torque, whereas the O2M is rated to 350nmT ) or you're doing lots of motorway driving
