Mk1 Octavia saloon sticky rear wiper

Featured Replies

hi, i have an 03 octavia saloon. recently the rear wiper has been sticking, in the dry it fails to move at all and in the wet i'm lucky if it moves 3-4 inches before sticking. if i wiggle the wiper arm then it usually manages one sweep of the window before it sticks again. at first i tried replacing the blade, there was no change so i tried tightening the securing nut holding on the wiper arm. sadly though this too had little effect.

has anyone else experienced the same or a similar problem. i'm wondering if there is a simple solution such as the wiper arm being worn or if i may have to get the wiper motor replaced all together.

any help or advice would be much appreciated.

have a good one guys

Just had the same on my 04 hatch!

ordered in new one that started and would not stop! got a refund and at present have just put a rubber grommet for the time being, £80 for something I rarely use I will see what happens nearer winter!

I have been told on the hatch it is a design fault washer goes thru the motor often leaks etc and rusts the motor mechanism rarely happens on estates as the rear window is almost vertical.

removing and replacing isn't difficult if you go that route except the shaft of the motor is tapered so care must be taken when removing it through the glass! I loosened the nuts first so the unit was just being held in place shut the hatch removed the wiper arm put the nut back on the shaft sprayed with some plusgas to release it somewhat and left for 1 hr to soak, then carefully with hammer and drift tapped it till the seal broke!

Heart thumping process to say the least!

Mine is the same, it will move freely but as soon as it meets any resistance, such as a particle of dust, it will stop.

If I lift it off the glass it will start gain. Its as if there is not enough torque in the motor.

Was that a new or reconditioned unit? I had the same. Fixed it with a replacement motor from someone on here for £25.

I had the same on my mk 1 octy vrs hatch,i stripped the motor down & it was full of grease & water mixed(due to the washer jet pipe leaking into the motor)cleaned it all up & re greased it & it worked fine.......for a week! so i replaced it with a 2nd hand one & it worked fine.

This is a very common problem on the hatch, and covered on here frequently.

As stated the design is pants as the water flow from washer bottle runs through the wiper motor asm and not separately through the nozzle jet like the front wipers.

The metal pipe in the rear wiper motor asm eventually corrodes and lets water seep into the electrics on the motor and pcb board. This then makes the wiper arm do some very strange things, like stop half way, come on when not actually putting rear wiper on etc. As the water moves across the motor it does not always make the symptoms consistent. I have opened up the rear motor asm and cleaned out a few times(loads of mucky crud in there) which fixed it for a while but symptoms will return. Either a new replacement or remove and blank the hole. Getting second hand ones(unless a lot cheaper) is not cost effective as the symptoms will probably already be effecting those.
