Reverse lights stay on?

Featured Replies

Hi if anyone can help,

ive recently completed a clutch change on my 1.9 sdi fabia. everything went to plan and is working apart from the reverse lights

we origianally tried the usual, circuit tests trying every gear then a new reverse switch.

all failed and i have managed to narrow the problem down to something inside the gearbox constantly 'making' the reverse light switch.

we did remove a pin which is held in place with a star shaped screw. the pin was coated with gearbox oil. im wandering if we have disturbed something that should be held in place or slightly moved something by accident.

if anyone has any ideas or could tell me the part that operates the reverse switch maybe how it works i would be very greatfull

Obvious test first. If you disconnect the plug from the reversing light switch, does the light go off?

It would help if you provided the gearbox code from the options sticker.

Does this pin have a flange on it with a screw hole in it? If so it sounds like one of the two bearing pins that hold the gearchange mechanism in place so yes it does matter.

Can you post a picture of the pin or describe where it came from?

we know that there is no circuit issues.

second test i have done alone was to connect the reverse switch to the wiring but leave the reverse switch un screwed from the gearbox and push the plunger by hand while someone stands behind the car telling me if the lights go on and off.

the result was that the plunger and circuit all works perfectly.

this has brought me to the conclusion that it is something to do with the internals of the gearbox.

the pins i described there are four of them i have pictures too which you should find below (first time uploading photos on here so hopefully it works)

ive just done the cable adjustment test and it didnt work the cables were adjusted correctly so im hoping its nothing too serious!

gearbox code(found on top of gearbox)

i have loaded the photos to facebook as i cant work out how to upload them properly on here.

all sorted and boy do i feel stupid!

good tip is make sure the little washer goes back on the thread before you replace the reverse light switch. its a small millimetre difference but means the plunger is not pushed down in the on possition constantly the washer gives it just that much space to stop the plunger being pushed in unless your in reverse.

thanks for all the help really apreciated
