What mod to go for next?

Featured Replies

Howdy all,

It appears i may find myself in the unusually nice position of having some money to treat myself with in a month or two's time.

At present, my MkI Octy vRS has 47000miles on it, is my daily driver and has had the following mods done to it:

Miltek Catback Exhaust system

Forge Dump Valve

Green Cotton Panel Filter.

Im reckoning i wil have about £200 to spend, and was wondering where the best results for my money would lie?

I had considered a remap, however the current set up is by far the quickest car i have ever owned/driven on a regular basis, and seems to have all the shove i need out of my daily driver. Further to that, ive yet to experience driving it in the bad weather, and am wary that the car may have trouble even putting down its stock power in the slippery stuff.

There also seems to be much raving done regarding RARB's? I have noticed that, compared to my rickety old gutless Focus, the vRS does seem a little cumbersome on Single Track B-Road Bends, and i dont quite feel as confident carrying speed through the bends in the vRS as i did in the old car. Will a RARB really make that much of a difference to the way the vRS drives?

Any other suggestions will be greatly welcomed. As you can probably tell, im not a hardcore modder or anythking - just looking for something that will make a big difference to the car without breaking the bank, or requiring hours of labour to install and maintain

Cheers chaps!

I was about to sat a RARB then carried on reading lol

One word YES. the RARB is the best mod to do to the car. for tht money you can get a new Whiteline 22mm adj or the 24mm adj or even a 25 mm one second hand

or this would be good if you will be going R32 23mm front role bar:

not really the best if you only gonna stick to the 19mm front bar but still ok.

If you get the whiteline I would suggest protecting it first before poping it on as they do corode easily as I think they are just painted where the Neuspeed 28mm bar I now have is powder coated I do believe, real easy to fit, easiest Ive found.

Will the rear anti-roll bar be a noticable difference?

Is this replacing the standard one with an uprated one?

BigJakk,I'll be very interested in knowing how you get on with this mild upgrade,if you go for it.

I'm new on here and have read that a few of the owners have recommended this.

It would seem very logical as your next modification.

A very noticable difference, mine was completely standard suspension wise till i put a RARB on and the difference was very noticeable. It feels alot more secure and you can carry alot more speed around a corner.

The original one is fitted inside the rear beam and stays there, all yo do is bolt on an extra one as the original is very weak. The cars were set up for understeer from the factory and adding a rarb makes the car handle alot more nuteral.

Also consider uprating your dogbone mount, just done mine tonight and the gear change is alot better and it helps stop wheel hop, and helps put traction down. The difference is also very noticable.

for the £200 you have you can get the 24mm whiteline and a dogbone bush and still have some change for some fuel to go out and have some fun when its all on lol

Seems that RARB is the way to go then!

By dog bone bush i take it we are talking about one of these:

Anybody know of any installation/fitting guides for Dogbone bush knockign around, id be curious to see if this is something that a beginner like me could sort out.

Cheers

That's the one, if you get the superpro one you can get the little insert bush that goes in the small end of the dog bone.

Do a search, loads of threads on this topic. It's a piece of p!$$ to fit anyway.

Steve

you need a vice tho!

I didn mine at Brawdy when I was based up there and I needed to break into the Tech workshops to use their one lol up on the airfield.

just need

13 mm socket

16mm socket

17mm pos?

a jack

stands

and something to support the engien/ gearbox when you remove the Dogbone

rest is self explanitary when its off mate,

2x 13mm bolts hold it to the subframe and the 2x 16mm(17mm pos?) bolts hold it to the gearbox.

the 2 piece bush at the rear is easy, just dont overtighten the center bolt or it will compress the bush and will be very harsh and noisy. the one at the gearbox side I think might need drilling out if you get the whole bush or there is an insert that goes into the std bush to fill the voids.

then just refit.

simples

ps forgot to mention, if you have to drill the round bush out of the front dont forget to keep the metal bracket for the second bolt as on the std one it is connected to the bush itself and needs to be cut off I think. but it is needed.
