What do I need for 190ish BHP?

Featured Replies

Morning All,

I've had my Stage 1 map from Unit 18 for a while now and I'm considering the possibility of a bit more power and whether it is worth the cost. So the question is what do I need for about 190ish bhp.

I'm thinking:

  • New turbo but does it need to be a hybrid or would the PD150 unit do? Also what's it going to cost?
  • Is a new intercooler required. Cost?
  • Big brake kit for sure.
  • Exhaust? I'm not bothered particularly if it's not going to add performance.
  • Clutch? Cost??
  • Anything else I may have missed.

Cheers.

With my Ibiza FR 130PD I managed to get very close to 190bhp and 320lb/ft with:

Custom tuning (to modifications, was quite aggresssive)

Forge FMIC

Milltek Complete System

Panel Filter

Needed a performance clutch to cope with the extra power/torque

Brakes I upgraded to the 312mm with fast road pads and stock discs

All of the above we can offer parts and install :) let me know if you would like some prices!

If you not planning on hammering it round a track all day then i`d go for a Pd150, dont bother with a FMIC or Exhaust, get a nice smooth map from Ali and you`ll be ok on the clutch front too. As for brakes, 312`s would be useful, or a decent set of pads and discs on the 288`s. This is the most bang for buck so to speak.

You could add a hybrid turbo instead of the standard one, thus giving you more power to play with at a later date, and knowledge that its not being pushed very hard at all. For the small extra it`d cost i`d prob go for this purely for the reliability factor. If you wanted a Intercooler, that would be another £600, as would an uprated clutch. But for the power you want, unless your giving it death, neither are essential tbh.

Thanks Mike, I'm looking for good reliable power, is the PD130 unit up to the job?

I'm looking for good reliable power, is the PD130 unit up to the job?

At that level i'd say no !!!

Mine did take a load of abuse (track and 1/4mile)

To be fair it did give up on me on track (turbo went) but I could never really pin point why (this was way before I worked here or had any work done here I might add) But at the time on track when it did go there was next to no fuel so mid corner there could have been a fuel starve and I didn't really look after it in the early years, after the new turbo and all the same mods, same amount of track use I had done the same mileage without an issue I just looked after it by warming it up and cooling it down :)

Also depending on rollers it did between 180-190bhp

Mike

They pop at 170-180bhp so for reliable power i`d go for a PD150 unit all day long. It`s no fun driving round wondering when you turbo is going to go pop. Forge FMIC & Milltek must be a good £1000 anyway, might as well spend the same on a turbo and have the power AND reliability

Matt

Mine popped at 173 on a very aggressive Awesome map :(

170bhp is fine for the 130's

I know a few have popped even mine, but I also know how these people drive their cars and how I looked after mine, mine went because I abused it - no warming or cooling, nailing it at 1500 in 5th or 6th.

Then when I noted what I was doing I never had an issue.

Mike

I had my pd130 for 2 years running close to 190BHP with no issues apart from a MAF fault which is unrelated to the power

As long as the vehicle is looked after correctly i.e. serviced at the right scheduled time.

warmed up and cooled down, you should not have an issue.

I believe alot more people share bad experiences appose to good experiences.

Thanks

I even know a load of people with PD150's & hybrid turbochargers that STILL have turbos failing... with pretty 'safe' mapping and again they don't look after their cars.

You could get pretty much anything to fail on a car if you don't treat it right!

Even totally stock cars I have seen turbos fail.... Again, either down to wear, abuse or manufacturing defect.

Mike

Oh yeah, no doubt how it's treated is the most important thing. Abuse it and as you say, even stock they will fail. But for a comfortable & reliable 190bhp I really think a PD150 unit would be the better route. No need for aggressive remaps then either, just a nice smooth remap.

Matt

Hey Matt, Indeed the 150 will be a more reliable at those levels - Like I said with my post I was not trying to hide anything the turbo did give up but I feel that it was more down to how I drove the car if you know what I mean. But after that I didn't have a problem and again I know people that have had high power from their 130s without an issue :)

Thanks for all the input guys,

I think I'd want to go for a PD150, I do drive with mechanical sympathy but I'd be concerned about it always being on the brink of popping. Mine is an early vRS (October 2003) so I'm not sure which PD130 unit I have anyway. I seem to recall something about there being different options and one better than the other. What about a reconditioned turbo?

Cheers.

I'd say PD150 turbo or hybrid the PD130. Probably wise to get an FMIC. Then a custom remap. In theory you could avoid the FMIC but given you're now talking about £1000+ of bits and mapping and labour, it's best to do the job properly and get the FMIC.

Bigger question is, do you do the clutch? For ultimate performance , yes! But it's another large wedge of cash. Personally, I'd choose to limit torque to <300lbft. Incidentally, limiting torque to just 270lbft means you could get 192BHP at 3750 RPM. :)

very similar to you, I've got an hybrid 130 from Unit 18, big breaks etc.. (all in my signature) supposedly running 190bhp (to be confirmed on Saturday) I've managed to get an FMIC for a good price but not fitted yet as I might save up something else.....
