Replacing AEE Engine

Featured Replies

Hi guys

I'm in a bit in over my head with the old Octavia. I hope you have a few advice for a rookie :)

For different reasons I'm replacing the engine in my '97 ('96) 1.6 Ocatavia (engine code AEE). I've bought a Haynes Handbook, and it describes that I should lift engine, cluth and gearbox out of the car in one piece. At the moment the cylinderhead has been removed (btw.)

I'm planning to buy a replacement engine and want to do the swap as easily as possible - but thinking of replacing the clutch in the same procedure (it has about 200.000km on the clock - should I bother with the clutch or not?). No symptoms from clutch or gearbox...

In any case; what do you recommend? Do as Haynes recommend and lift it all out of the car - replacing the clutch outside the car? I am thinking that it might be possible to only lift out the engine itself and then do or don't the clutch. I hope my question makes sense. (english is not my native language - nor car lingo :)

Thanks in advance

It's too much hassle to separate the engine and gearbox in the bay to lift the engine out.. Take it all out as one.. If the clutch is on it's way out yummy as well replace it at the sometime whilst it's out... Depending on what vehicle you get the replacement engine from you may need to swap over some bits from your existing engine anyway like the clutch and engine mountings

Thanks a lot mate :)

while the engine and gearbox are out of the car it would be worth replacing most things (especially if you don't know the history of the engine which you are putting in) which would be easy to access off the car.. a few examples being cambelt/water pump, head gasket, clutch etc etc... basically big jobs that might need changing in future

your English is better than most Brits Morten, never apologize for being smart enough to learn another language!
