Shark stage 1 review on 06 Tfsi

Featured Replies

Firstly a big thank you for excellent service from Ben.

Sts worked well. Standard map safely stored on sts in about 30 mins.

Emailed and new map delivered. Upload took a little less time.

I had previously felt the car was a little slow and not as flexible as I would have liked as well as lacking a little off at the top end.

These complaints have now gone. Traction light now flickers occasionally.

Car feels smoother. Revs quicker. Pulls harder. Is more flexible in lower rev range.

Overtaking is easier as is licence threatening speeds if you flex your foot on the motorway. Who on their right mind changes the increments from 10 to 20 mph above 80.

First tank averaged 32 mpg so happy with that.

Occasionally it does not feel as torquey. I guess I am learning to drive a new car. Plus the map needs to bed in.

I will update the thread when I have done some more miles.

I can see why people say out should come from the factory like this. Out does not feel modified. It is smoother and more flexible as well as more powerful.

Yup I am one happy Shark "victim".

I would recommend changing your Diverter valve to keep that power.

Ah yes mine has the standard dv.

Next service is in November. I will change it then .

I had forgotten about that weak spot.

Gary

Is the potentially weak diverter valve just a problem on the older Tfsi engines, or is it still an issue on the latest Tsi ones?

From what i have heard some TSI engine have the older DV valve i think its just pot luck at the moment, its not a massive job either.

A few more days driving and the just keeps getting better .

it is easier to pootle with the increased flexibility. It pulls from lower in the rev range and above 4000 rpm it its like another car.

This is a great upgrade and first tank saw 32 mpg with some motorway. Oh and a lot of seeing what it could do. I am not sure I would liked more pOwer as there Is now torque

steer

I used to have a feeling like torque steer but that has gone since fitting the Audi TT/S3 console bushes. You will find its the cars front suspension wiggling about with the OE voided bushes.

Good work - now start work on a Sharky stage 3 :)

Will consider the console bushes.

This is the first car I have modded do no rush to stage 3.

Brakes may be next when they need replacing.

Possibly anti roll bar next - can you get a rarb for an estate.

Oh no its started........

I will update when I have a few more miles under my belt.

What mileage is your car currently on? Am hoping to get the same done shortly.

Just gone over 40000. Had it from 16000.

we waited for 2 and a half years for extended warranty to run out.

Well worth the wait.

If you look back through my posts you will see I never fully bonded with the standard car.

I always felt it was missing something. That was until I drive the evo triangle. Driving for fun making use of good sight lines. I still felt like the car could be better.

The remap has added what was missing.

Greater grunt when pootleing. Stronger midrange. And greater desire for the redline with no loss of puff.

Obviously longevity is a concern. I choose shark after talking to ben. He made a big point he did not chase numbers but rather wanted to make the car more drivable.

Compare his figures forcompanies stating 265bhp for stage 1 you may be unimpressed. But I very all his cars make what he states. Also I feel he had taken some mechanical sympathy too.

Previous cars have been

1999 imprezza turbo best most poweful car I have owned. Only sold because loss were being stolen and ours was on the road

2001 Mini Cooper probably best fun car that enjoyed revs and was still fun at slower speeds. Only sold as we could no longer justify 2 cars and the mini paid for rewiring of the house.

2006 mondeo st220 best cruiser by far. sold because our wheels were stolen where we used to live. In fact why we moved.

I fish hence need am estate

Just to finish.

I hoped the vrs would have something of the speed of the imprezza, fun and agility of the mini and cruiser of the mondeo.

Standard ours fell short.

Sorted out the power. Yup it pushes you into your seat.

Fun - will look at arb. But when pushing standard chasis does feel more frisky. It's at higher speeds than the mini sadly.

Cruiser - reluctant to mod too much but I find the car over firm with too much roll. I can see when things need replacing std may not be the choice. It has had 2 rear shocks under warranty so will be so while. When needed I will do a search and seek advice. Oh and wish it had come with 17 rather than 18 wheels. May not look so good but would ride better, handle better if evo tyre test using golf gti is anything to go by. And save 30 quid a corner when new tyres are needed.

Suggested suspension changes are they usually all round or just the front.

Thanks for all the updates. Are you running exclusively on 98ron or is the map flexible enough for you to use 95 too?

Do you have any power/torque figures?

Re your alloys, I'm certain you could easily find someone on here who'd be prepared to swap their 18s for your 17s (+ a bit of cash ofc).

Only run on vpower. The tfsi needs 98 as a minimum as standard anyway.

twice I used tesco 99 the cel light came on. And went off when switched to v power. So that is all I use.

Mind you the tesco issue may have been one garage that folded less of the good stuff. Have used another with no problem.

Shell stations area nearer anyway.

As to the alloys I have 2 sets one with winter tyres I would need someone with similar winter tyreso to swap one set and michelin pilot sport 2 on the other. Chances are slim methinks

Oh no power our torque figures so no real comparison.

I actually am not that bothered to find out unless it means the increase is less than 25% as that would undead the number of insurance companies that would quote.

Also every rolling road gives different figures do it would only be and indication

Well the increase should be less than 25% actually, all [edit: Shark] remapped figures I've seen for stage 1 TFSI give around 235-240bhp, which would be ~20% increase.

Shark quotes 240 on the website and it's 197 standard so over 20% the first limit for many companies.

I should have said 20% in the post above.
