MDI retrofitting

Featured Replies

Just after some advice/discussions. I got my scout delivered after a considerable wait a couple of weeks ago (well impressed and worth the wait  ) but it came without MDI fitted that I thought I'd ordered :( . The dealership has assured me that it is possible to retrofit for under £200, however not sure as I was pleasantly surprised that my iPhone will play music through the bluetooth system. The big questions are; is the MDI worth the money and has anyone else had it retrofitted?

Cheers folk

MDI displays music name/tracks on Bolero/Columbus/Maxidot and can be fully controlled from Bolero/Columbus plus when connected it charges the phone i think.

If you have an SD card reader or HDD on your system then not sure how MDI is superior (provided have same tracks on phone and SD card) except for charging. Alternatively you can stream music tracks from phone via bluetooth and the sound quality is very good.

I do not have bluetooth or MDI but SD card is so far sufficient for me.

First things first - what does your order paperwork say? If you've ordered it, then the dealership should retrofit it. And yes, that would be possible for under £200.

The system just adds flexibility really, by allowing music to be played from a hard drive, USB stick or iPod/iPhone, depending on the attached cable. But as you've said you've got the latest Bluetooth module in there, then you can stream music in this way.

Retrofitting is pretty straightforward though, with a control box in the glovebox which you connect your device to, and a loom that goes from the box to the back of the headunit.

I bought the MDI kit off eBay - cost me £194.99 from Tech Toys. That was 6 months ago and I can't find them on eBay anymore.

I then got my local car audio place to fit it for £40. Perhaps your dealer could get the kit cheaper what with them being a dealer and fitting it for free due to them mucking up the order?

Certainly seems to a good bit of kit though, in terms of putting my iPod in the glovebox and forget about it. The MDI kit charges the iPod and its all controllable through the stereo and the maxidot/steeringwheel controls.
