LW radio

Featured Replies

Sorry if this has been covered before, but as a cricket fan, I need either BBC Radio 4 LW or Radio 5 live sport extra in the car - our Yeti seems to have neither. Is there a way to get LW on the AM radio part of the Bolero radio ? I have not managed it yet.

I had heard that a DAB upgrade will be available at some stage, but not sure when.

Thanks

Pete

Latest update from SkodaUK

"Dear Mr Blum

Thank you for your email received yesterday, the 28th of July. I have now received further information from our Product Marketing Department, who in turn are in discussion with the factory itself regarding the introduction of DAB to our model range.

At present, we know that DAB radio will definitely not be available from Å KODA in 2011. The factory is currently investigating compatibility with existing stereo systems and we do not anticipate that we will have any definite ETA for the introduction of DAB until 2012 at the earliest.

Naturally, I recognise that DAB is a very desirable option and I am sorry that I cannot provide a more definitive answer. In terms of equipping the vehicle yourself, as per the excerpt in your most recent email, I would have to counsel against this.

Unless an accessory is Skoda Approved and can be fitted without the need to modify the vehicle, there is the risk that it will not work and may also affect your vehicle's warranty.

Once again, I apologise for the lack of a definite timescale. We are of course aware of delays in delivery of model year 12 vehicles, although this has begun to alleviate. On this basis, it may be worth waiting a little longer to order a vehicle which features DAB.

Thank you once again for contacting Å KODA UK.

Kind regards

If you have a handheld DAB radio, you could link it to the system with aux.

Mine actually work alright locally, but a little iffy when travelling from Durham to London.

I've finally given up with LW in the car. Get a portable DAB and put it in the car, or if you don't mind spending £70, a Pure Highway which can retransmit the DAB audio onto an FM frequency for you to pick up on your radio.

You can get the cricket on MW at 603. However you may be unlucky and not be able to pick the signal up at that end of the spectrum. We are lucky in the NE as we get MW at the low end, R5 at 693, cricket at 603. When I go to the North West R5 goes to 909 and the cricket disappears off into a wall of distortion. If only the Czechs played cricket then they would let us have DAB now.

It is a poor decision by Skoda to delay this. I don't expect it to be standard yet, too early for that, but it should be there as an option for those who want it.

I have my doubts that DAB coverage will ever be as comprehensive as FM. There are large areas of the UK where there is no coverage and also where the coverage is variable, especially in a car.

I have a Pure Highway with the stick on windscreen aerial, feeding via the AUX socket to the Bolero in my car and it gives good reception where the signal is good and no reception where is it doubtful.

However, it's good enough for my purpose, and, as I got a refurbished one for half price, it's also good value for money.

I doubt if a portable DAB would give acceptable results in a car but you'd only find out by trying.

Fred

I think the FM network is pretty good, especially when it follows the signal on a national network. The dodgy ones though are MW and LW, LW has virtually disappeared off car radios now. If you only ever listen to FM then DAB is pretty much unnecessary. If you like MW or LW stations though then DAB is becoming your only chance of picking them up with any clarity. Clearly there are many blank spots but then the same is true of crackly MW. At least when you get a clear DAB signal the sound is pure.
