Can I get my 1.4mpi remaped?

Featured Replies

Hi all I am after some advice. Can I get my 1.4 mpi remapped or is it a diesel only thing??

Thanks

Yes but the gains are so minimal it wouldn't be worth it.

It's only really turbos where remapping have decent gains (petrol and diesel)

Yep - The MPI is a tame engine really... Relatively quiet and not amazingly economical but not absolutely terrible either if looked after... And pretty bomb-proof if looked after also.

Only issue is... No real power.

Things i've done to help the engine along a bit: replacement panel filter, direct cold air induction pipe, catch can (to stop recirculating dirty oil back into the throttle body/intake manifold/map sensor!) cleaned up aforementioned parts, A decent clean of the engine internals, uprated temac cylinder head gasket tightened up properly, new timing chain (swapped at 115k)...

If you have lots of time and money to throw at it then maybe you'd reach 100+hp, but at that point unless you were doing it as an MPI enthusiast it'd probably be cheaper to go down the TD route - even if it's not a VRS they're still a lot more tunable and economical!

Personally i'm a bit of an MPI enthusiast and i've got a cylinder head that i'm porting and polishing out.

Sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but...

...Have any of you MPI'ers considered swapping out the throttle body for a golf mk3's by any chance?

I'm nearly certain the mountings are the same - would just need the intake port on the manifold to be ground wider a bit...

WOW 8 bhp :giggle: i am thinking of an induction kit instead, will i get more power that a remap??

if you haven't guessed i know nothing about engines :giggle:

Yes its possible.

We have a few remaped mpi's in our portuguese forum clubeskoda.com and the last guy that did it (this August), claims it was worth every penny..

Fitted a performance air filter also, and says that is mpi is far more responsive, more lively, with little or no increase in fuel consumption.

Obviouly on this engine, a remap is more like tweaking.. but if you love your car, every performance gain helps loving it even more, so if it was mine, i would go for it.

But that's me talking.

Awesome, isn't it?

Filter - 8bhp - doubt it!

A remap should make it smoother/more responsive etc as well as more powerful, but I've never had anything remapped (never owned anything turbo - no replacement for displacement after all!), so couldn't say for sure.

If small in engine size, take weight off. Simplez  (and free) I ran with no rear seats when i had the 1.4 8v and it flys :giggle: (relatively speaking)

If you mean the back end lifts off the ground... Then yeah, it flys! ;)
