DPF Light on

Hi all,

I've had my car now for about 7 months without the DPF light ever coming on. However, this morning to my annoyance it came on, on my way to work. I took it for a 25 minute run down the motorway whilst being in 5th gear at about 2300 revs (approx 70MPH), and the light went off after about 7 or 8 minutes. Is this a good sign or is this the begininng of DPF problems?

In the last 8 weeks the car has had some long runs to Cornwall, Birmingham, Bournemouth and Stanstead so i was surprised to see the light come on. My daily journey to work is only 1 mile each way though so not ideal by any means, but it does get regular good runs.

I also had a thought about the fuel that i use regarding the DPF but it may just be a coincidence. Since i've had the car i've always used Shell V-Power Diesel with no problems but i wasn't getting a good MPG so i thought i'd try BP Ultimate Diesel. I've been happy with the BP as i was getting a much better MPG from it (averaging roughly 5-7 MPG more) but i wonder if the DPF isn't liking it??!!

My understanding of V-Power is that its gas to liquid process produces a cleaner burn and hence less smoke. Less smoke equals less chance of the DPF clogging. So i am wondering whether to go back to using V-Power. Trouble is its expensive and i'm not getting the miles out of it!! Still, if its "looking after" the DPF better then its worth it i guess.

Does my theory have legs or am i talking complete ********??!!

I use standard Shell fuelsave diesel with no problems (although I'm aware the CR has less DPF issues in the first place). I really don't see the point in the premium diesels for the vRS as I didn't notice any difference in performance and negligible MPG difference...

On third Superb using BP Ultimate Diesel, had to do one refill with Shell VPower on Motorway so cannott give any comparison on mpg, never seen the DPF light on ( except when turning on ignition) or obvious sign of regenerations i.e. fast tickover and very hot engine/ehaust and cooling fans working, so I think you can rule out fuel.

If you have someone near you with VCDS ask them to check if you actually have been getting regenerations and if so the amount of build up in your DPF.

Do you know at what point the DPF light comes on?

Your case sounds perfectly normal to me. Very similar to my own experience and seems to tie up with what the hand book suggests.

i had the same problem with my pd vrs, changed the dpf sensor {£60} and no problems since.....
