Manual or 6 speed tiptronic

Featured Replies

Anybody know how the manual gearbox fares against the tiptronic jobbie?

Do you mean DSG, or plain Automatic? Not sure they do the Automatic in the Mk2... It is DSG?

It doesn't compare. DSG or tiptonic is amazing. Much less effort in traffic, much smoother changes, faster changes. I will not be going back to manual. There have been a few debates on DSG vs manual and it's all personal choice.

Wondered when we would see the next thread on this subject.

Horses for courses, but personally I love DSG.

Won't have another manual if I can help it.

I would never buy a vag group car with a dsg till they stop all the problems they have with them, and no im not saying the manuals don't have problems. The only motor i have driven is a tranporter that has the dsg, and yes it changes fast, smooth. The repair cost of the dsg boxes are thruogh the roof with some media mags reporting charges up to 6k for a box, how can than be cost effective to a car thats 3 years old.

What problems?

There were issues with the Mechatronics units on cars around 2008. You can get the Mechatronics replaced under warranty (if you have one). If you haven't i strongly recommend having a warranty once Manufacturer one runs out. To change a Mechatronics is circa £1400 inc VAT & Labour. To change the box is about £8k for the 6 speed (the box is around £6.5k) that is fitted to Octavia's

Having had a manual and now a DSG vRS i can safely say i much prefer the DSG

I spoke to a VW mechanic a few months back and he said they have virtually no issues with the DSG anymore (no more than you would expect with a manual).

However saying that mine has stalled twice and is occasionally very jerky....Getting it diag'd on Tuesday so hopefully it will show something up.

They do learn driving styles due to the Fuzzy Logic in them. So it might just need a reset. Or just go and thrash it down a few B-Roads. Just remember when you get pulled to say to the copper "I was teaching the DSG box a lesson Officer!"

I wish I had a DSG now having read this thread :( but I am far too tight it cost more! But then again the maxidot price would have come off that! There again they forgot to invoice me for that :D maybe next time

Drove DSG, liked DSG - purchased manual.

It's all personal choice, I prefered the full control of the manual.

But as others have said - if it's mainly town driving you're doing DSG would be a god-send.

DSG all the way
