Split hose..of some sort

Featured Replies

I am really hopeful that this is a footprint to my earlier fuel query thread. I was tidying my engine bay a little the other day, as you do and spotted a rather noticeable split in one of the pipes , any ideas what this is, the severity and a cost of a repair please? Any information very much appreciated thanks. :|

Thats your breather pipe. Very common failure. Nothing to worry about.

You can replace it with an exact part, upgrade silcone replacment or join the crew and get yourself an oil catch can.

Cheers DBP,

Can you send any links please :p Any chance of pointing me in the right direction (via ebay!) Oil catch can?? This sounds interesting. Sorry for being useless on this one, but I've never had this problem. Ta, So in your humble opinion could this make my fuel a bit more through the roof than normal? I'm loosing around 5mpg :'(

It's actually your lower hose that is broken.

this is a catch can. http://www.saikoumichi.com/Stage2OCC.htm it will replace a fair few horrible pipes

I can remember what the lower pipe is called so I can't find any of the uprated pipes unfortunately.

I found when mine split it did change the MPG, once it was fixed I got my 5mpg back.

Cheers mate, they look pretty cool! I am tempted to try and fit it myself, I feel really ignorant that I didn't know it was a breather pipe :o Cheers for the link, think I might have to order that! I thought my overlapping gears seemed a bit crap!

So my next question has to be......Since it's a commonly encountered fault, has anyone knocked up a how to?

Loads of them on here, give it a search. Bowders1 generally has a write up for everything. But it's pretty simple.

It'll take 10 mins to swap but be prepared to lose some skin on your knuckles :giggle:

Also make sure you have a selection of jubilee clips (preferably the right size) to replace the factory clips which are a pain in the a$$

Some how I don't think your words are strong enough in describing the VW one way clips haha.

Err isn't that the wrong one? Looks more like the pipe that goes to the front of the engine, after the Y pipe?

Anyone? Yes, it's the pipe that's below the y shaped one that has split cheers.

I would have used lots of different swear words if it weren't against forum rules

They do the other ones but i dunno what it's called lol My link

I would say, if you are replacing the bottom pipe, you might as well replace the Y pipe at the same time. It will go soon enough.

ah sorry, yes I have sent you the link for the top pipe, apologies. It however is a common item to fail too, so you might as well get a whole new silicone breather set. Much cheaper on the bay than a shop - I think awesome want around £70 or £80 for both pipes !!!

A few more updates on this: i have managed to remove the upper and lower ( I have the scars to prove it :dull: ) But I am wondering, looking closer at one of the pipes on order from Creation, I can see it has a 'T' shape on the end and from what I have managed to remove I can see there is an existing 'T' shape hose already on, its hard to see in my photos as its tucked away but you can just about see it, so assuming that this will need removing- how on earth am I ever going to get into it!!! its near impossible and it has more of those evil clips..Help! :S

Fingers and palms intact? How did you manage to remove the hose clips on the T  they're EVIL!!!

Just about lol its a bloody nightmare, i ended up using a knife on the t piece to slice it then it should just pull away. Watch you don't cut anything else though with the knife lol. I ended up doing that as i couldn't get the clips off.

It's easier just to pull the whole system out, and replace everything. Then you can refit it all with stainless hose clips.

I went back to a stock system (from the SM CC), with the addition of a Viper flouro Y-hose:

Looking at these pictures has just reminded me that I still haven't removed the SAI system, and summer's almost over! Better crack on....

Now, far be it from me to generate unwanted praise but I am not going to turn down the offer of a medal after this! :D

How the HELL did you do that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just kept trying and eventually the clips did pop off, try use a flat screwdriver and prise the clips up they do come off eventually lol.
