An Update & Some Questions

Featured Replies

Afternoon all. I haven't had the opportunity to post in a while as I've been working a lot of overtime and when I have had time - I'll be honest - I've just grown a bit weary of the whole car business, it seems as though there's always some niggles which can't be gotten to the bottom of.

But here's an update. As I remember I began a few threads appealing for various information concerning the following; cabin condensation, water ingress, turbo whistling, CV rattling/knocking, headlamp condensation, A/C fan constantly running on and engine idling problems; engine revving without prompt.

All of the water ingress issues have been put to bed. As it turned out it wasn't a pollen filter issue (though I have had it re-sealed) nor was it a case of my door being out of alignment (though apparently it is very slightly). In fact the water ingress was very severe and eventually wound up so severe that I'd a pool of water in my rear footwell (driver's side) every morning. This was over the winter. I had the problem solved at the Skoda dealership in Uphall or Broxburn (West End Skoda) outside Edinburgh. I can't quite remember the details completely but something to do with a scuttle panel being knackered and a bulkhead or some such thing? These things were letting water in and there was a huge volume of water in the undercarriage of the car. I have noted a substantial improvement in fuel efficiency since this repair.

Unfortunately, the CV saga has not ceased. And actually I don't even think it is the CVs or anything to do with them. Perhaps the way I described the problem led mechanics to believe that? The MOT failed a few months ago because (I'm told) something was insecurely mounted to the gaiter housing. And I think that this was put down as the cause of this noise as well. It wasn't however as it was (is) still there and noticeable as soon as I drove away from the garage.

I'll just attempt another description of the noise. A sort of turning, clicking or clunking when cornering and (this is previously omitted) the same sort of jarring, knocking noise when making even the slightest sustained steering adjustment at high speeds (motorway speeds). That's as best I can put it. I haven't the first idea what it is... It doesn't effect performance, I don't think? It hasn't had any consequence, it remains an irritating and disconcerting noise however and I'd rather I knew what it was so I could have it fixed of course.

The next thing is a new problem which arose just after I'd a spring changed. My passenger side spring gave in to the pot holes which are a disgrace around where I stay and I now have a sort of tensioning, gradual click as I pull away slowly on any sort of sloping or flat (but mostly sloping) road. It's on the passenger side that the spring was changed on and it's another irritating noise to add to the collection I have (CV? Turbo & Spring). I'd love to get it sorted.

The turbo still squeals. My air con fan still comes on without prompt and sometimes I'll get the blower when I want the actual AC. In fact that's most of the time. And the engine still revs without prompt. That isn't just when at a stand still either that's through the gears so that the minimum revs seems to be just above 1000; depressing the clutch fully and forcefully the revs relent - they can't be done away with. I feel them with my foot and notice the car running away from me if I'm at the bottom range of a gear. Again something I'd like sorted.

That's about the size of it folks. Just thought I'd put that out there for you all to muse over. For the record I'm driving an 03 MKI Superb with just over 100000 miles on the clock. (100 BHP bottom of range version).

Oh and could I ask... How to drain my coolant system? I've recently had a radiator leak and used rad-seal to sort it. It's worked but I'll need to drain it and put more antifreeze in of course before the winter comes. Easiest way to go about it?

Logic,

The knocking noise you hear sounds very like the CV joint has had it. A simple enough fix. Turbo's do make some noise, but if it's excessive you may have a loose or split turbo pipe, again not too expensive to fix.

That's pretty much it for me.

Best of luck,

Rob
