Need Help Immediately

Featured Replies

Now i am a newbie to everything and the world of skoda but i absolutely love the vehicle and the model........

I live in the west indies (which may not be the ideal place for european cars *keep hearing this* ) on an island called BARBADOS....

anyways i have currently acquired a skoda octavia 1.6ts ( i know it is a 1.6 gotta check on the model) the transmission started playing around by only moving when u give the car alot of throttle and now has completely died to where only reverse is working.......

I have been told that the issue could be something as simple as changing the transmission fluid (which i was told has to be changed every couple months and is only a special transmission fluid costing down here around $200 dollars which is a lot when the average car owner pays about $50 or less for transmission fluid) although i have not checked that theory out as yet i was wondering if anyone had any advice or have incurred such an issue before.........

Also was told that the sump and wats not under there is soft metal and when i jacked up the car i had noticed that it was bent and that could be an issue.......

Currently hearing alot from so-called experts down here soo i wanted to hear from ppl who have and do use the vehicle almost every day.......

As you guys can imagine a transmission for the car is alot of money and currently finding one is like non-existent soo i was wondering

1. what are you'll guys views

2. if anyone has english manuals and whats not

3. if anyone has used a transmission from any other vehicle especially from a the skoda fabia or skoda felicia......

Lastly any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated honestly cause i love that car and right now am at a lost as to what to do or who to go with.......

thanks for any help in advance

Most of the running gear is standard vw parts. That might make sourcing parts easier for you.

Ok thanks gadget man........ sooo ur saying volkswagen transmission parts would work directly back into my transmission and that i could get a transmission from off a vw and it could work back on mine? and if soo which vw??

Too JB i live in the west indies and our times or slightly different from urs..... i actually posted this in the early morning is correct before i went in my bed after coming off an outing wid some friends ok.....

Anyone else could help me or knows or have had these issues already???????

Anyone?????????

Your Octavia shares the same parts from VW Golf/ mk4. (USA Rabbit)

There's no way Skoda transmission fluid should be changed every 2 months!!!, more like every 100,000 miles. VW/Audi transmission fluid shouldn't really cost you any more than any other brand.

soo can the transmissions work back the same as well???

If your Octavia is a 1.6 a transmission from a VW/Audi,etc (Golf mk4 derived) 1.6 will fit.

thanks a million will look into that down here and let u guys know what is going on...........

I'd have said change every 50_000 miles (80_000km); original source of my advice being ZF Transmissions, and I very much doubt you'll find a significantly more authoritative source on vehicle transmissions than them.

I take it this is an auto from the description of the symptoms? If so, I'd start with an oil change, and then worry about sourcing a new 'box if that doesn't work.

Also, I can't remember usernames off hand, but we do have a few other members in the Caribbean (I think even Barbados) who'll possibly be willing to help if you need something that requires additional bodies on site.

Sounds like the usual 1.6 "chocolate diff rivet" problem. Happened to me on my first audi A3 1.6. Rivet sheared and launched a bit through the diff and into the gearbox. This also caused gearbox fluid to leak onto the clutch and gave me exactly the same problem the OP has.

Hey, I am in Barbados too. had a similar problem with my '02 octy. I replaced the filter/strainer in the gearbox, and since I decided I had nothing to lose, I put in all the transmission fluid I had left over from my F150 and peugeot307, about i gallon. reassembled the car and it has not stopped since. I need to keep it within the speed limit, however. green horn
