Helix & OE DMF finally fitted

Featured Replies

Big thanks to the guys over at Awesome. Fantastic service in every possible way, yet again

More thanks to Clive Atthowe (probably never read this, but if you ever do...) for getting it fitted, and informing me of the leaky rear main oil seal and getting that replaced too.

Fitting

Apparently all went well, bar the oil seal which they replaced at just the cost of the part. It was a revised part... the new one being made from aluminium(?) or some kind of metal. Apparently the old clutch didn't look too badly worn, even running with the Hybrid.

Initial impressions

- No more grinding noise in the mornings (release bearing).

- No more rattling from the DMF.

- Pedal feel is mad different. Much heavier than OE IMO... it really wants to spring itself back up. Sign of good springs and stuff I guess! Old clutch I think had the full 126k miles on too...

- It bites *really* hard in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Pulling out of the car park after fitting I was jolted forward :giggle: I tend to change out of first ASAP, so at roundabouts and stuff.... also jolted forward twice. Seatbelts are a good thing!

- For some reason I feel it's given the car a more sporty feel to it. It just seems to bite and go!

- I'm not one for hard starts / burning the clutch taking off in 2nd, so I couldn't tell you about how this performs sorry.

Initially... unsure whether I like it or not.

Bedding in

I'm slowly getting used to it. The pedal doesn't feel as heavy already, and I think the harsh-sudden-mega-bite is calming down too. It's still got a lot of bedding in to do though I think. I've driven around 50-75 miles ish of mixed driving so far. Quite a lot of start / stop on one day which I hear is a good thing.

I have noticed a strange car-juddering feeling, mainly when going up a small hill slowly in first, just in that moment whilst releasing the clutch pedal (there's a roundabout around here that is just before a gradual incline). Clutch judder I think? I didn't get this previously, but seem to remember reading that it should disappear with a bit of use. I hope so...!

I'm still not remapped yet. Hopefully with next months pay.

Will update in a few hundred miles and let you know how it's going (for anyone that's interested :))

So this is just the original flywheel? Why did you go for this combination? Does it hold any more power?

Helix organic stuff and a OE flywheel, yes. I don't fancy the SMF chatter, but need it to hold a bit more power for the Hybrid for when it gets re-remapped :) I don't intend on taking the power any further than this, so the Helix (or indeed Sachs) plates and DMF fit the bill nicely for me.

Hello Mark.r.cullen,

I am glad you were happy with service. Unfortunately you have to bare with the SMF chatter,

but like you said it will hold more power for the hybrid.

The torque is very addictive!

Thanks

Hassan

I thought the oe flywheel would struggle with hybrid power?

Bit of confusion on this topic now Mark thinks he has a DMF but Awesome say SMF?

It's a bit like running the standard clutch on a remap if you get my drift. You can do it, and providing it's driven properly and with a sensible map it'll be ok. But tbh the standard dmf isnt great at standard power, so I'd expect it to knacker out quicker. Theses also the thought of spanking dolla on a turbo & fmic & uprated clutch only to still have to have a torque limited map and not be able to launch it without fear of braking something.

Its a Sachs DMF :-)

Heard stories both ways about its ability to cope with Hybrid. Some say knackered in so many miles, others saying it's fine even on a 300BHP Golf. It's a daily driver with sensible map and driven sensibly, so I'm taking my chances ;)

My dmf is fine and I launch at every set of lights I come accross. Had hybrid for 10k'ish... 273ft/lb and 201bhp. Always accelerate from as low rpm as I like. Always pull from 40-60 in 6th foot to floor. Pure abuse. Only time I can get the clutch to slip is if I do 3 or 4 2nd gear burnouts from reverse lol may slip then. Standard clutch and flywheel ftw. On around 50k miles now. Ps don't buy my SE.

Is there a stronger dmf that can be used? Rather than having to go smf? The Sachs organic clutch is good for 390lbs sO should be fine at 350ish?

Good man, im sure that set up will do you just fine

Ross seems to be proof that they can take utter abuse

TBH Mark's post was a little ambiguous. For a while I thought he was planning to go SMF when he remapped.

lol....

Bit harsh xa0sx.

How is it ambiguous? "Helix & OE DMF finally fitted"?!? Meh. Whatever!

I didnt think it was ambiguous :) just some people are too busy and skim read :)

The original post isn't the bit I had trouble with, it's that bit of that one. ^^^

Far from skimming it, I read it about 5 times. :)

Yeah, my bad. I used the word 'it' instead of 'the clutch'.

What I meant was I don't want SMF chatter, but I still need the clutch to hold a bit more power for Hybrid, thus I chose the Helix uprated clutch parts, but retaining the OE DMF.

Still, given I had immediately previous just said that "it" was indeed the OE flywheel, and the title says DMF.... oh well :wonder:

In other news. I was driving a clapped out old Corsa with a ridiculously light clutch whilst mine was having an oil change yesterday. I jumped back in mine and the clutch felt dead heavy for about 10 minutes. I wonder if the clutch does bed in, or you actually just get used to it :) Once used to it though, it felt a bit more like the OE clutch. But again, if someone changed my car back to the OE clutch overnight without me knowing, I am sure it would feel very light!

Happy days! I'm off for a drive!

You get used to it

I'd like to know this too! But I'm led to believe no one make an uprated DMF :(

So far clutch is the only thing holding me back from going hybrid - I dont fancy the SMF chatter as its a daily driver, but dont want to kill a DMF. I'll be getting a custom map to 350ish lb's torque and dont drive it like I stole it so I'm guessing the DMF way should be ok!

2 of my mates are running hybrid power on a standard clutch and a standard flywheel without any slipping or DMF problems.

There's also tons of people running the Sachs uprated clutch/DMF running big power too if the clutch does start slipping though.

Cheers mate :D

What sort of power are they running?

What sort of power are they running?

201bhp + 273ft/lb (AmD's rollers) and 225bhp + 355ft/lb (Jabba's rollers)

The place that fitted my clutch said the actual plates looked okay, and that was the standard clutch. But people on here seemed to reckon anything more than a straight remap would instantly destroy the clutch. The internet is a wonderful place. It's hard to tell what's BS and what's not sometimes :)
