Furby gets an air intake upgrade

Finally I got round to doing mine. I went a step further and put ducting attachments to the airbox and front air inlet so I can easily change the duct tubing if need be. I think the one I've currently got is a little too cheap...the foil rips very easily. Might go for something a little more durable later on.

Ducting bits and bobs: 10cm flanged spigot to put through the inside of the airbox secured with some m6 bolts, 10cm aluminium ducting and 10cm ducting male connector made of flexible steel which I bent out of shape a little to fit in the air inlet opening in the front and secured with more m6 bolts. Oh, and some worm drive clips to secure the ducting to the spigot and male connector respectively. £10 for everything off ebay.

Dremel to cut hole and sand edges in air box and a power drill for the bolt holes.

Has a more manly grunt when revving up. Too early to tell if there's any affect on the mpg.

Still not sure on what to use to block off the warm air intake bit....

Can't justify paying for the proper upgrades when it's only a 1.4 MPI....... :$

I bet it was some what cheaper that the £90 odd that SEAT want for a larger intake. :yes:

£10 for all the ducting bits and bobs off the bay. £17 for a dremel multipro and £25 for a Bosch 14.4v plus 50 piece bit set. All second-hand though..... I'm a student, hence the pikiness.

I think you should list/link to the parts used if possible. If not, describe sizes etc. Otherwise you may find yourself getting a lot of PMs.

I recall Tech1e's induction filter set up which is exposed to all the crap from the engine.......couldn't the OEM airbox house the cone if I could secure some duct tubing between the airbox's air outlet and the cone? That way it gets insulated 'cold' air through the pikey air inlet, is shielded by the OEM airbox and makes it way to the throttle with no exposure to engine crap?

I can't see any reason why not...

But to be fair the next bottleneck isn't the box or the filter - it's the throttle body, so it's kinda wasted money on filters where there's more than enough for the standard setup to use with a box supplying nice cold air.

But no worries there - I should have something to show you soon enough to fix that ;)

Chris, have you got anything more to report on mpg or performance in general. Have you noticed much difference since fitting a bigger intake pipe? I'm looking to do the same although with a slightly small diameter pipe so i'd be interested to hear your thoughts :)

My mpg before doing anything was average at best. 30 tops.

I replaced my thermostat housing (it was broken), replaced my head gasket (just to be sure), did a full oil flush and replace, cleaned my map, installed the pipe, and re-ducted the recirc away from the throttle body... And now i'm getting around 38 on average, with a lot more poke. It's pretty much changed the car to be fair. A lot more go, for a fair bit longer!

If i'm being relatively gentle I can eek out a hell of a lot of miles for an MPI. 380 miles for 50 quid (45mpg) isn't bad at all. It's going to eventually have paid for itself really...

Not to mention that:

When I took my airbox off and old pipe - the flap was stuck in one position. Never changed (tested under heat) - this meant my car was eating hot air all the time, even in the summer. Not exactly ideal...

Also noted a fair bit of oil in the pipe leading back to the throttle body - thankfully i'll not have that anymore :D

I'll get something posted up regarding reducting the crankcase breather somewhere nicer over the weekend at some point - with a little piccy of what is being caught by the can.

As for expanding the throttle body... I'm working on it. ;)

I remember what you said about the bottleneck being the throttle....but if I manage to get a used induction filter for £25 off a member here.......cheaper than a pipercross panel.......

It might be cheaper, but then it's not a buy-once, use forever solution.

Besides... The airflow difference going through the filter right now won't be needed unless you've got something that pulls more air through it - so it's effectively a useless part either way without some throttle body tinkering.

Obviously every little helps, but it's diminishing returns without opening the bottleneck up at the throttle body before the filter.

That induction filter needs replacing? Can't it be cleaned with that spray?

It can, that was probably a bit off from me - My main point was that it's a cost right now that won't really offer much in the way of an improvement at this moment in time.

Save your cash for now. You _might_ want to be scouring the bay soon for a particular model of throttle body ;)

I totally understand your point. Always a scourer of the bay! Will keep an eye out...

Ended up having to change the duct tubing today....there were tears in the bend. I used a really flimsy tubing at first....bought a more sturdy one from homebase today. It was a quick fix thanks to those o-rings.

So, if anyone is inspired to do this mod....avoid the aluminium foil type duct tubing. Go for the more solid one!
