Furby gets an air intake upgrade

Featured Replies

Ended up having to change the duct tubing today....there were tears in the bend. I used a really flimsy tubing at first....bought a more sturdy one from homebase today. It was a quick fix thanks to those o-rings.

So, if anyone is inspired to do this mod....avoid the aluminium foil type duct tubing. Go for the more solid one!

Hehe, was already one step ahead of you there ;)

Lol, as always, Chris! At least I learnt the hard way.

Finally got around to fitting my air intake upgrade today. Didn't go overboard, 75mm plastic tubing that matches the rest of the engine bay. I left the hot air feed hanging in the engine bay, any better suggestions on this one for what to do with it? Otherwise, my initial impression is good, if I put my foot to the floor in second gear I can hear air being sucked in which gives the engine more of a grunt. No real performance increase although it does seem a little smoother through the rev range, the dead spot at around 2800 RPM is less noticeable. I guess it remains to be seen if the hot air feed allowing the engine to run lean at certain times will effect MPG, I don't think my intake was working anyway though!

A bit annoyed at the homebase ducting I used....it's ripped around both rims....all the way around the circumference. Any other brands or type of ducting I should try?

Thanks Chris!! How goes the frankenstein engine?

10/10 for effort!!

But as mentioned I fear its use is limited, indeed pointless.

I recall Tech1e's induction filter set up which is exposed to all the crap from the engine.......couldn't the OEM airbox house the cone if I could secure some duct tubing between the airbox's air outlet and the cone? That way it gets insulated 'cold' air through the pikey air inlet, is shielded by the OEM airbox and makes it way to the throttle with no exposure to engine crap?

What crap from the engine out of interest?

There is more crap in the air outside that is now been drawn up your pipe and into the filter anyhow.

Was quoting fabdarav from the other thread:

"Yeah but as tech1e says it's a 16v engine (100bhp.. :giggle: )......cost me about £220 in parts inc brackets, filter, ducting adaptors etc....but still cheaper and a much better fit than an of the shelf kit which is for this engine!!!

P.S. mine is a fully sealed cold air induction kit (C.A.I)...Tech1es is not, so my filter is less exposed to engine bay crap and hot air!!!

PPS .....the parts for the 8v (grommets and gasket) were bought from my local Skoda dealers, I went in and ordered them and picked them up a couple of days later (£10 max) B) "

I'd better clarify...........when you look at the engine bay there is usually fine road dust, etc and other carp all over the engine bay (just look at the tops of the suspension turrets, the battey box etc)........by sealing the filter so that the only point of entry is the bell mouth (opening) the filter is not as exposed to all that other carp....it is also protected from water splash etc, etc...therfore staying cleaner for longer.....and it dosn't draw in the hot air from the engine bay either (which we only need it to do in winter....I just part blank the hole in the slam panel)....... B)

^^Blanking part of intake is enough for winter, or do you try to attach the hot air feed?

Hot feed it always blanked off.....but my engine creates lots of heat (this type is known for it).....and the engine bay is more "full"....aircon, etc ..........in the other thread was it you who wanted a pic of my blanking plate????
