Cambelt or Chain Octavia Mk1

Featured Replies

HI all, apologies for potentially asking a daft question, but after some advice:

My dad does alot of driving in his mk1 fab (52 reg) and recently we discovered it has a timing chain and not a belt . .

can anyone tell me if the Octavia ever had an engine fitted with a chain and not a belt? I have a Mk1 VRS and I know that has a belt, however:

Am looking into buying a car for doing alot of miles and the appeal of having a chain driven engine is much higher due to the need not to change it every 60k or so.

many thanks in advance

Rob.

VRS has a cambelt.

VRS has a cambelt.

I know the vrs does but do any other mk1 octavias have a chain?

Octy mk1 (all versions) = belt

Fabia mkl (some petrols - ie. 1.4mpi) = chain

for chains, I suggest thinking more along the line of Japanese engines - Honda, Nissan?, Toyota....

I thought that while there is no set interval for chain replacement, they needed replacing when they start to become noisy.

thanks for info. they reccommend having it checked every 100 k or so and if needs slight adjustment then re tension etc.

Honesjohn publish a good list of chain engines. The Mk1 (and 2) Fabia 1.2 engine (3 cylinder) is a chain.

I think all Skoda diesel are belts with the exception of the 2.5 TDI V6 on the Superb?
