1.2tsi is great engine but once you go over 60 you'll struggle to get 45 mpg

What's the problem with that, my last car did 26mpg average over two years. :rofl:

As I said, if I didn't need a diesel that'd be my choice. We already have that engine with DSG in our Yeti.

In a yeti 1.2 Tsi must be a good engine then!, ;)

I once did an experimental economy run to work over a week ( 120 miles each day) keeping to 60-65mph ( mostly dual carriageway with some country roads) and achieved 68mpg in a '99 MK4 Golf 1.9 GTTDI (not PD). Couldn't keep this up as it was so boring ! . Normal consumption was 54mpg driven fairly fast and 42mpg driven like a lunatic ( late for work - very early start). This shows that the modern economy diesels are not a Quantum leap better than the older VAG models , athough they will be a lot cleaner re. emission levels.

Although I've had my GL2 since the end of May I'm only just approaching 2000 miles. I'm not a high mileage driver really, though been busy with work so even lower over this summer, but then I didn't really buy the car for that reason.

Anyway, on my latest tank with a mixture of one long (300) round trip and lots of shorter runs I've calculated consumption over the tank of 60mpg. I've not exactly been driving like a hippy (did about 68 on the long trip) and with the engine still young that's not bad I reckon.

Hoping it will just get better with age. TBH I mostly bought it because I wanted a low emissions car, but the mpg is a bonus. I don't do sufficient mileage to make massive savings but its still satisfying how much longer I leave it between fillups. Plus using less fuel keeps us Lefty types happy!

I have noticed the trip mpg on my most regular journey has improved by 2-3 mpg recently as the engine eases up, and my driving style hasn't changed.

I'm on about 14,000miles in my GL2 now, mainly doing the same commuting journey of 72 miles each way, I have found that there is approx 10mpg difference for each 10mph difference, so:

60mph (average 48mph, journey time 1hr 30mins) = 74-77mpg

70mph (average 51mph, journey time 1hr 25mins) = 65-67mpg

80mph (average 54mph, journey time 1hr 20mins) = 55-58mpg

I have been doing the same journey 2/3 times a week since I bought the vehicle in December 2010 and normally travel at 80mph. It doesn't matter which brand of diesel I use.

I've done just over 3500 miles (my commute as gone from 95 miles a day to 50 :) ). On the journey, i average 68mpg which is on 20 miles dual carriage way and 5 miles in and around city centres so its slowly creeping up with the more the engine is being run in. Going on a decent run to norfolk this evening so itll be interesting to see how it averages over a good distance as well.

We've just come back from a trip to Swindon (from Birmingham). On the way there we had some 80mph stretches but a lot of traffic, averaged about 58mpg. Way back, 120miles with less traffic, averaged 60mph we got 75mpg. So hitting 80 seems to kill the old mpg, keeping below 70 with less traffic really does my wallet a favour!
