Greenline II mpg experiment

Featured Replies

Now the car is pretty worn in with 10k on the clock I've looked at the last three full tanks, all driven economically going to and from work, 20% city and 80% open road driving sticking to 60mph.

Tank 1: 78.6mpg

Tank 2: 78.4mpg

Tank 3: 77.3mpg

Now I've done one full tank driving an UNeconomically as possible. To get a comparison.

Tank 4: 61.0mpg

(my worst ever before was when brand new @ 68mpg)

So the difference between 60mph plodding and following the odd lorry and blasting along is a difference of about 30% extra fuel in my case.

Over 10,000 miles per year that's an extra 35 gallons of fuel per year or about £4 per week.

So can I be bothered to potter everywhere to save £4 a week, considering the GL2 is still returning over 60mpg when driven rather briskly? :wonder:

Everything in moderation. Plod along when conditions dictate (road and financial ;) )and drive it like you stole it when the road opens up and the bank account is healthy. Good blast every now and again does both you and the car some good.

61mpg when driven uneconomically isn't bad at all. i wonder how that compares to a thrashed 1.6 cr tdi 105ps??? i reckon you can get mid 40's in a 1.6 cr

Drove my 2.0 TDI CR 140 Golf as uneconomically as I could home the other night from work, normally would return mid to high 50's, still achieved 42. Will do 60-odd on a very sensible run, seen 70-odd out of it in the past with the wife behind the wheel!

Beats the 19.2mpg I got out of the vRS on the same journey hands down! Certainly wasnt as dull though!

how many miles on a full tank do you all do ??

What do you call thrashed? On a private road doing 80 mph I will get 60 mpg crtdi 105 easy with only 3k on the clock ;)

Golf will generally do mid to late 500's, will do early to mid 600's if I happen to do a few longer journeys on that tank but thats about its limit.

Mine does about 625 miles on a tank

my current golf does 650+ miles on a full tank on a motorway run

my current golf does 650+ miles on a full tank on a motorway run

What size tank though? Fabia is 45 litres

golf 55ltr and does 58mpg and my new fab is 45ltr and does 78mpg ;)

So 10 litres more fuel in the golf hence the 25 miles more ? So that's 2 gallons mine will do on a good run 65 mpg per gallon so 130 more miles 625 + 130 = 755 miles for the fabia with a similar size tank as the golf ;)

Economical: 750

Uneconomical: 560

Refil 41 to 42 litres.

Spending most of the time I can with my foot to the floor.

Certainly not figures I'd state here.

And I didn't say thrashed, as I don't thrash cars. I call uneconomical going fast as peak economy is about 55-60mph, but thrashing implies a lack of mechanical sympathy and I do look after cars. But I now know that the GL2 is quite happy doing 3000+rpm.

At the moment I travel on the motorway at 1500 rpm which equates to an indicated 57mph in the alfa. It's a 1.9 jtd 16v and as an average I get 57mpg on fuelly with my best 834 miles out of a 61 litre refill. That's 62mpg.

With my 1.6 cr what is the best speed and with that I hope I should better the alfa by some margin

Whitelighter I had the same engine as you in a fiat stilo 1.9 cr jtd it was a cracker but the crtdi 1.6 105 bhp is a smashing engine but we get 625 miles out of a 45 litre tank I know the greenline has a greater mileage but the greenline is not the crtdi 1.6

Greenline 1. 34,000 miles on the clock.

Driven like a tree hugging hippy 76mpg (It will do over 80 mpg but I rarely have the patience)

Driven like the average motorist 66mpg

Driven like an idiot having a leaden foot 62mpg

All on the same 100 mile round trip to work mixture of dual carriageway, towns and average A roads.

Usually gets to 600 miles before the light comes on for fuel. Regularly go to 650 before filling up.

Wow my crtdi looking better and better

Ok, so I wonder what i could get ( don't give a **** about trees - do care about cash in my wallet). I happily cover my 36,000 miles a year at hippy speeds and get better than the published figures for the alfa.

Pump up the tyres on the monte and it will be interesting to see. Will add fuelly to the thread about economy

36,000 k miles a year you move around a bit depends how you drive it really but you'll be on motorway most the time,60- 70 mpg

Wow my crtdi looking better and better

I took 4 mpg off of all my figures. It over reads by exactly the same amount as the speedo over reads...4 mph.

I really dont bother driving economically anymore, always at 75...ish on motorways etc and on the limits everywhere else. The Greenline 1 is really only more efficient than a standard PD 1.4 when on longer motorway runs IMHO. I settle for around 67 ish mpg as a benchmark. 400 mile round trip all motorway to Stansted and back gave me about 68mpg 75-80 all the way. Be interesting to know how a standard 1.4 PD compares at the same speeds.

I did the valve trick on mine once......went to 720 miles before the light came on...cheating really.

Yeah, live in camberley, work at stansted. 160 mile round trip :)

If you compare to a Tdi, not a 1.6 CR with one cylinder lopped off. ;)

Fact is people will often "big up" their favorite, which often is what they drive.

The 1.6 CR has the edge on performance and smoothness. As an all round package it's very good, but probably about 5 to 10 mpg down on the GL2 which is a true economy car. For true penny pinching motoring with a slight compromise the GL2 takes some beating, provided you don't want rapid performance and can handle a little old fashioned diesel noise at high revs or when starting it on a cold engine. But overall best all rounder is probably the 1.6 CR though if you want diesel.

Personally if I didn't want a GL2 I'd go for the 1.2 TSI as I can still average nearly 50mpg in that and it's sooo much smoother than any diesel, even the 1.6 CR.

Would have had a gl2 but need sports seats and they weren't an option

I like my diesel to sound like a tractor....! PD......Proper Diesel ;)

Drove a Volvo diesel the other day, common rail and smooth as silk. The next car might not be a Skoda but I will miss the clattery, lumpy note of the 3 pot.

1.2tsi is great engine but once you go over 60 you'll struggle to get 45 mpg
