Have I got a boost leak? - 1.9Tdi

Featured Replies

I have a PD130 1.9Tdi A3 (I know it's not quite a skoda haha but I have been assured you guys know your stuff! Plus, this looks like a great site for Tdi engine help).

Had it less than a year and from the whole time I can remember there is wooshing/hissing noise that can be heard in the cabin (passenger side) when accelerating. The car seems to pull well but the noise annoys me a lot as I have been in my friends mk4 1.9tdi golf and his is very quiet in comparison.

This has led me to believe that I have a boost leak. I have done a little research and it seems that oil stains can often be a sign. My car drips a little bit of oil... And also, on the very odd occasion when accelerating the engine goes into limp mode. Also, I remember being underneath it not long ago to fit the egr delete kit and some of the turbo pipes were caked in oil...

Is it worth getting underneath and having a proper look around? What do I look for?

Any help would be great!

you need vag-com or fit a guage to see what it's making first

If the Audi boost pipes are anything like the same as the Skoda ones, the clips will be worn and the joints will be opening as it's pressurised.

Follow the pipe from the EGR to the intercooler and back to the intake, giving a good tug on each connection. There shouldn't be any play in it. If you can move the joint open a few mm, then it will be leaking.

If it's on the passenger side it's more likely to be leaking out the airbox surely?

The pipe connector plugges into the EGR was loose and I replaced this months ago by chopping it off and using a jubilee clip. I have a feeling I will be buying more jubilee clips to do the same when I crawl underneath.

D@mn straight; Mine popped a boost pipe when the cambelt was changed, and half the joints are now fastened with real Terry Jubilee clips!

What are real terry jubilee clips? I would love to replace the terrible dog clip connectors on the boost pipe like I did the one on the rubber pipe leading to the EGR valve. Has anyone done this for the connectors on the aluminium pipes?

Photo of real Jubille Clips Terry is the company that historically made them.
