How wheel weight effects the car?

Featured Replies

I have 17" spiders on my car and I do like them, but am thinking of going for something else that will fit over my Bembro front brakes without the need for spacers.

Mainly because they are a pain to balance (I'm getting wheel wobble at 75 to 95mph) and sticking out more they throw a lot of mess up the sides of the car.

I've seen a few options but am not sure really what I fancy, but my main consideration is weight.

But feel free to reccomend anything that looks fairly standard as that is what my car is about, surprising people.

Now I understand that lighter is usually bad for buckling tendancies, but good for unsprug weight which should make it faster....

But how does the weight actually affect the way the car drives?

Lighter too easy to spin, so heavier is better or pick up the pace better at speed etc...?

Any input appreciated. :)

i think your struggle to find something that looks oem ish and still be light, you could look and see how different oem wheels compare for example? like 17" monzas, s3's, evolos, tt comps etc, for price-lightness though id highly recommend pro race series of wheels, if you go on there website it gives you the weights, but unfortunately shout modified, i do like my pro race 3s have had pro race 1.2 before too also very good, even though the 3's not the lightest of the pro races i love em

Thanks Trevor,

Really I just want standard alloy colour and not too fancy.

The fact that I have uprated front and back brakes is a bit of a givaway, particularly when I've got bright red Bembros visable through the front wheel. :giggle: (and the back discs are nearly the same size as the front!)

But before I commit to any wheel I need to find out how the weight (light compared to heavy) will effect the car. Lighter apears to be better... unless there is any benefit to increased weight I'm not aware of?

What's the budget?

Team dynamics pro race series, BBS RGR's, OZ Ultraleggera...

I`v got a set of S3 Avus wheels which are known to be pretty heavy replaced with some TD wheels. I was surprised at the difference it made. Cornering feels much nicer, best way I can describe it is more "nimble" maybe. It doesnt feel like you have lead weights on the wheels, before it`d feel like when you turn`d in it was pulling you to the out side of the corner quite a bit, it`s really made a noticeable difference even when plodding about normally. Speed wise it feels quicker off the line, not much difference at faster speeds, but doesnt feel any less planted than before.

Not a great comparison since you have neither wheel, but hopefully gives you an idea. I did have a set of spiders and the TD`s are lighter than they were.

As said above, you'll struggle to find a light OEM looking wheel.

personally then id go for pro race 1.2 in silver mate or even the 3's

Pretty open, thinking why screw the car up over four wheels when it's already cost a fortune?

+1 for the pro race 1.2's.

Light wheels enable the suspension to perform better and slightly improve acceleration and braking.

Heavy wheels can be more buckle resistant.

That's it.

I have to say, they look OK at 9kg per corner.

I've got a spare 17" spider at work with no tyre, I'll have to weigh it.

Only three problems... they are black, 18" and won't look standard enough for my car.

My superleggeras clear Brembos but they need 3mm spacers. Maybe 3mm has less of an effect than 15mm?

I do know for sure my car feels a bit more sprightly with the 'legs on, than the Audi TT wheels I use for trackdays (need no spacers with those) - Kind of got that the wrong way round, but then I like my day to day drive to be more fun than the odd trackday.

My spiders run 8mm spacers on the front only, but I really want to remove them altogether if I do go to the trouble of changing the wheels.

Actually I've been looking at OZ wheels, like you have, but things that claim to be very light (like the Ultraleggeras) don't have a flippin weight listed. On a google search I can find loads of places to buy from, but very little weight info... :wonder: other than the Pro Race series from Team Dynamics.

Ok fair enough. My mate got them fitted on his RS4 and swears by them. They are available in silver. Lol.

Serious car needs serious wheels. :)

OZ Ultraleggera's maybe ??? ;)

Ultraleggeras in 17x7 are 7.25Kg (7.71Kg in 17x8).

Nice list up here if you're going by weight rather than looks.

Very handy, thanks. B)

According to that the Superlaggeras are lighter than the Ultras by 0.4 kg.

Out of interest, I've just weighed a 17" Spider and it was 9kg.

Performance alloys quote the 17" Ultraleggera as 6.9kg.

And I am fairly sure, at least in 17", the superleggera is another 0.4 to 0.5kg lighter as well. :D They are definitely the lightest 17" I am aware of without starting to look at specific motorsport themed wheels which cost an absolute bomb!

I am on the lookout for another set of superlegs for track use, tatty, so if someone sees a set, let me know. ;) I will ban anyone who buys a set without telling me. ;):D

I wouldnt worry about ruining the look of the car with wheels tbh, the spiders are quote noticeable IMO anyway nt that's a bad thing :) if anything if you had a set of wheels on people would look at you and say look at this guys with fancy wheels on his skoda lets mess with him then bam!! Lol

Worth cOnsidering lol :)

For what's it's worth I think something with lots of spokes would suit well, dont know why just think it would set the car off with the colour of the car :)

Never mind 2nd hand, I'm struggling to find new ones. They all seem to be 18"+. :wonder:

+1 Similar experience of late (albeit with 16's) when switching my wheels from OEM VW LeCastalet (Bora SE) wheels to TD Pro race 1.2's. I took it out on a spireted drive and it felt kinda weird to begin with but then grew on me and deffo more nimble on the circuit @ Castle Combe.

I run the TD Prorace 3??? five spoke in silver for my "summers"...very nice like a Comp five spoke but way cheaper!!

Re the wobble!!....hhhhhhmmmmm......this could be to do with the ammount of offset that you are running! The steering geometry is directly affected by the ammount of ET (offset) that you have. The steering axis is a line taken thro the centre of the top and bottom pivot points (top swivel bearing and bottom swivel joint) and onto the road. Then a vertical line is drawn thro the centre of the tyre contact patch (width) there is then a gap between where these are on the road....this is the offset of the steering geometry. The more you push the wheel out from what the OEM was the more can reduce the self stabilising (centreing) making you get more bump and puddle steer, tramlining, etc!!!!

An increase of 5mm each side on the tyre contact patch centre from the OEM is (eg ET from 42 to 37mm) OK.....10mm + and you will feel it!!! B)
