MDI and iPod issues

Featured Replies

Hi

I am running my iPod via the MDI cable, but I don't seem to be able to navigate my way to the albums/artists I want. When I connected it, it would only play from the beginning of the iPod, ie groups beginning with the letter A. Despite pressing all the various buttons, and combinations on the Swing, the only way I seem to be able to select tracks is to click/scroll through them individually. In other words, I don't have the ability to go to straight to tracks from, say, St Winifreds School Choir ( :D )

I'm using an older generation iPod ( 30gb 3rd gen?) - does this make any difference?

Any help would be much appreciated - thank you.

Is the firmware on the iPod up to date??

I have a 6th gen 160gb iPod classic that works fine and allows you to navigate around, browse playlists etc using the radio controls but it still does ocassianly lock up and need resetting which is unbelievebaly annoying when it happens!

If you take a look here - http://www.my-gti.com/3009/volkswagen-media-device-interface-mdi-firmware-upgrade-0111-kw22-2011 it may help. This is the latest MDI firmware and it doesn't show the 3rd gen iPod as compatible, however, further down the page it says the device can't be charged through the port which would make me think it is compatible at some level??

I think you need to invest in a newer iPod

Thank you!

It might be cheaper to switch to an MDI/USB cable and run it from a memory stick!

Thanks for your advice

320Gb USB hard drive - about £40

160Gb ipod - about £300

Bit of a no brainer :)

Fair comment on costs, but remember quite a few people have 'older' ipods and its ideal to leave one in the car rather than junking it/selling it/not using it. Shame it does not appear to work with the 3rd Generation.

OK - I've ditched the iPod and have tried a USB flash drive.

I copied stuff from my iTunes library to the flash drive - it all plays OK, but I still have to scroll through the tracks one by one.

I don't seem to have the ability to select an individual group, album or track. What am I doing wrong???? What buttons should I be pressing?

Help! (please)

Try turning the arist/album type info off by toggling the INFO button on the Swing. You can then (if compatible and i note the comments above) you should then be able to scroll through the folders, Artist/Album/playlist etc on the device and then selcet what you want. Certainly not intuitive, and not recommended whilst on the move. If you wish to jump through a number of tracks turn the right dial on the Swing forward or back to advance/go back respectively. Hope this helps, but recognise it is not a great explanation.

A-ha - sussed it

You need to click on "info" then "browse" then "top"

You can then scroll through artist, album etc.

And the good thing is that my 3rd Gen iPod now works absolutely fine through it. I am so glad I didn't buy a new one.......!!

Thanks for your help

haha! Glad you got it sorted before splashing a lot of pointless cash!

On another note, I'm also having some issues with the iPod.

I'm using a 1st gen iPod touch. It'll work fine usually but sometimes it will stop allowing me to skip tracks, then once the song finishes it will skip a few songs (depending on how many times I hammered the button on the steering wheel) and play again but will keep doing this. I have to unplug the iPod and plug it back in (not the easiest thing to do when driving) and then it'll work for maybe a couple of days tops, and start doing it again? A tad frustrating! :(
