CV Boot failure

Featured Replies

My CV boot has failed, well split in half lol, This is an MOT failure as i understand and mine is coming up next month, is it a DIY job? Ive got a jack and axel stands with most tools but will i need any specialist tools?

Or if i took it to a garage how much would they charge?

Any advice/Help much appreciated

Cheers

Dan

thats cheap :o :p

thats cheap :o :p

I know the part was ordered in and cost £12 odd and he said 'call it £25 all in'.

I paid 45quid for the part from gsf in derby and me and me mate fitted it!quite easy to do!prob an hours work if the first one I bought from eurocarparts was the right one, had to wait a day for the new one!all I'd say make sure you've got a 32mm socket for main bolt!think its was 32mm just check but easy enought to do once everythings off!I changed cv joint not just the boot too so thinkin ya might not need large socket after all haha

You will need a torque wrench, decent socket set, large hammer / CV removal tool, ball joint splitter and a pair of crimps for the retaining clip, you could buy the lot for a bit less than a garage would charge you (around £100) but be warned it is a messy horrible job.

if your near unit 18 go there. My cv joint and gattor was replaced for about £30

Same as stevobeavo I got mine done by ali at unit 18 for £30 it can be a right pain in the backside of a job for the sake of £30 I got someone else to do it

Tempted by unit 18 again as i need loads of other jobs doing so it might be worth the long trip , I'll give Ali a pm , cheers guys

Hi Guys

The outer boot is an MOT fail but the inner joint and boot is not just a pass and advise.

Some times the cv joint is stuck fast on the splines and you need the vag tool push it out dont go whacking it with a big hammer when you have the nut off or you will be buying a new joint as well.

I have changed them from the back by unbolting the shaft off the box and tapping the shaft out of the CV.

Cheers guys

Just to update this, i was £120 for Mot amd cv boot (including fitting)

The cheap quotes/prices are probably for the non OEM split type boot which is very easy to fit (no dismantling) but they do not last as long as the OEM type.

I think unit18 only use OEM parts.

I replaced the outside boot on SWMBO's Golf last year, the OE boot (and clip) was £20.72 from a VW dealer.

Nobody in their right mind would change one for just £10

They changed my gearbox for 125 and filled it with OEM oil, which I was quoted £45 for by skoda. So that's around 80 to replace a gearbox.
