Tyre Noise

Featured Replies

I have a 1.6 diesel Fabia II. It drives nicely and handles well. So I am a happy owner.

However, I am surprised by the amount of road noise. It may be the tyres which are Bridgestone 195/55/R15 and I think the type is called Turanza.

Has anyone any thoughts on quiet and noisy tyres for a standard shopping trolley Fabia?

I've just put one of those on but cars come with continentals from new, tyre noise will be there regardless of tyre :(. Just down to how suspension and engineered bits are on the fabia , bridgestones and continentals are good tyre's think it's one of those things you have to live with plus the sound proofing ain't great either

i got dunlop sport on my monte

Must have had what was left over ;) , most of the fabia's I've seen have been shod with continentals

I got Dunlop Sports too!

I agree with SlowBloke. My new Fabia Elegance definitely produces more tyre noise than the Continentals I had on my previous Fabia. I am due to change over to my new Continental winter tyres next month so it will be interesting to compare the tyre noise then. I wish you could choose the make of tyre when you order the car - (I would choose Continentals).

My vRS like most others come with Conti Sport Contact 2's. They're not bad but once they get to 3mm all grip drops off. Road noise is acceptable it's better than most cars of this size. I put Turanzas on my last vRS and while there was decent grip there was lots of road noise past 50mph. If I had the option I'd have gone for Pirelli P Zero Nero or one of Uniroyal's RainExpert type tyres.

I had four Bridgestone tyres fitted to my old Punto a couple of years ago and NEVER again. For the first 5,000 miles I felt as if I was driving on four ballons, a horrible ride!

Thanks for your comments. It's unlikely that I will be changing tyres in the near future but was concerned that if I fitted another brand of tyre the noise would be even worse or that there was a problem with the car.

The Bridgestone web site page for the Futura tyre says:

"No other tyre satisfies your quest for harmony quite like the TURANZA. Its state-of-the-art construction and innovative tread design achieve an unprecedented synergy between safety, comfort and performance. The TURANZA is engineered for superior traction and braking in the wet while offering outstanding stability and steering response in all conditions. Most of all, its smooth, quiet, economical performance will redefine your concept of motoring perfection."

I accept that the tyres grip well and the steering is very responsive but the noise is annoying. I imagine that the tyre side walls are quite stiff which helps to give responsive steering but transmits more noise from the tread to the car body.

The Wife's MkII fabia Vrs came with Dunlop Maxx Sports

Utter, Utter rubbish

I got turanza er300 on my VRS. I can say turaznza is very noisy especially in cold condition. And grip is not very good too. I replaced it with Hankook Ventus S1 Evo K107 after 1k miles.Hankook has much more grip but noise is may be 30% less. But my tyres are 205/45 and have stiffer side walls than 195/55.

Our Fabia Elegance has Continental Premium Contact 2, 205/45 WR16 tyres as as standard; noise level from them is reasonably OK with exception of roads with the 'gravel rash' surface. Main complaint for us however is the harsh ride these low profile high speed tyres produce.

Last winter we fitted some 15" steel wheels fitted with Bridgestone Blizzak LM30 195/55 tyres; quieter than the conti's and a noticeable improvement in ride comfort.

Lucky you getting Continental Premium Contact 2 205/45 WR16's, I got the Bridgestone ER300's :(

If when winter comes I find the grip lacking as others reported last year I will be changing them probably to Uniroyals and hopefully get some money back selling the Bridgestones on fleabay.

Since the Elegance is not a sports model I don't really understand why it gets the 205/45/16's rather than 195/55/15 with a rim design similar to the Elba or Atria to stand out from the Antares rim of the SE. I would happy trade any reduction in handling for a softer ride.

It's Skoda UK, they have a bee in their bonnet about fitting large rims and low profile tyres where possible :S

Mind I outflanked them with the Yeti order by directly asking the manufacturer to fit 16" not 17" alloys to our Yeti :D However they have now firmly closed that route to other customers I understand emoticon-0106-crying.gif

 tyres are tyres ive done 850miles in the 1st week of my car on the dunlops makes no difference

I went the Uniroyal route. 'Rain Expert'. Very grippy in the wet/snow and extremely quiet BUT....... a very big 'BUT'. Made the steering very mushy. Very little feedback from the road and daft though it sounds I had to turn the wheel more for the same effect. I put them on the rear and they work fine. I wont ever put these on the front again.MPG was reduced as well, not much but noticeable.

Need to change the fronts soon so going to put on Michelin Energy Savers.

I got Dunlop Sports 205/45R16 on my fabia Combi 1.2 tsi DSG (2012). Nice tyres :)

And soon I put Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 on (195 55R15) B)

Interesting about how the Uniroyals changed the steering so much, with more grip I would have thought the steering would be sharper or at least similar if the increased grip was offset by more flexible sidewalls.

I have seen other comments about the reduced mpg as the trade off for more grip.

With them on the rear is the ride less harsh? One of my biggest criticisms of my car is the sharp jolt particularly at 50+ mph from the rear passing over joints, trenches dug across the road etc

I wonder if Avon ZZ3 would affect the steering in the same way?

It is hard to describe. Probably better to say it removes 'feel'. For braking it grips really well, they just make the car seem more wooly. Rubbish description I know but best I can describe. The ride is less harsh on the Uniroyals. If you look at the Uniroyal it doesnt have concentric rubber like most tyres, just a block pattern which may explain it.....not sure.

Its a moot point for me now as my Greenline is I believe going to be written off. Had an arguement with a very large Deer at speed. Front end is pretty much gone, both wings, lights, bumper, rad, aircon, bonnet and everything else up to the engine as far as I can see. Its a mess.

If it is written off I wont be getting another Skoda, just fancy a change is all.

I appreciate describing these things is difficult, the point is you have highlighted the downside of the Uniroyals and not what I would have expected from a tyre with more grip. Had you gone for a tyre marketed as energy saving so less rolling resistance and grip then also a loss of steering feedback could be expected.

Now I will probably go for another tyre. I'm happy to trade a slight drop in mpg for better grip and a softer ride but would prefer the same or better feedback in the steering.

More to the point sorry to hear about you meeting with the deer. Over the last 15 years you are the third person I know in some way who sadly has had this experience. In both the other incidents the car was a write off although to be fair one car worth under £1000 and the other about £2500.

I had Dunlop's on mine and they were absolutely horrendous (it was one of the first UK cars, reg July 10, bought it ex-dealer demo) and they all needed replacing after 7000 miles as they were covered in bumps and holes. Now running on Barums which are significantly cheaper but much better!

Good to hear your experience with Barums as they get good reviews and as you say cost significantly less than Goodyear, Michelin, Continental etc. Since in Europe Barum is part of the Continental group I guess they get some of the benefit of the research and development.

I had Dunlop Fast Response on my last car. They were a harder ride than the tyres that came off, a mix of Goodyear and a different Dunlop, so I certainly wouldn't want then on my Fabia.

Also the tread depth on the outer section is less presumably as part of the advertised stiffening for better handling so if you have an uneven wear issue you can end up replacing them prematurely. I had my car tracked twice and only very slight adjustment made. It always wore the inner edge of the left front and outer edge of the right front. I looked at other cars and they were the same so I assume a characteristic of the drive and suspension setup. I swapped the tyres around to even out the wear.
