Just how knackered are my wishbone bushes?

Featured Replies

Now after more than 126000 miles its fair enough that the bushes need replacing, but how buggered are they?

If I turn full lock left with the engine running but car stopped, when I feel the rear wishbone bush I can feel movement between the wishbone and the car (subframe?)

Is this normal or does it.mean my bushes are definitely borked?

i should add that the movement is felt when I move the steering wheel with one hand and feel the wishbone with the other.

I've just replaced the rear front wishbone bushes on my 51 plate 150K miles, a single tap with a hammer saw the centre of the bush on the floor leaving just the outer alloy ring in the wishbone.

If you're going to change just the bush, note the orientation of the existing bush before removal, knock the middle of the bush out, thread a hacksaw through the hole saw a slot in the outer ring, when the blade grabs stop and saw a second slot and the outer will just tap out with a screwdriver.

Clean the hole with emery and tap in the new bush

Hi Dox,

Thanks for the picture, that's been really helpful. I've managed to bash the bushes out of my old spare wishbones now, in preparation for adding polybushes.

cheers

How much movement is "normal"? Should I be able to feel any movement?
