EDL is actually part of the ABS and not strictly part of either.

Any more acronyms to throw into the mix... I'm getting confused now! lol

I will look in my manual although I'm sure it describes EDL in there and how it works etc.

Of course.....and so is ASR.......But in Skoda Fabia MKI you get either ABS.....or ASR inc EDL & ABS....or ESP inc ASR, EDL, & ABS!

They all rely on the ABS wheel sensors and the ABS pump unit/hyrdalic block.......there is a difference between the ABS and the ASR and the ESP equiped blocks......plus for ESP you also need the gyroscope sensor block behind the lower central dash area!

On the newer Fabias etc you can also have ESP+ which is ESP (inc. ASR, EDL, & ABS) but with HHC (Hill Hold Control) and TPM (Tyre Pressure Monitoring).

Look and the spec list for the new Yeti if you really want a long list of anacronyms! :S

TCS incorporates EDL.

EDL (Electronic Differntial Lock) was part of ASR...ASR is part of ESP. On other cars of the same time eg VW Polos etc that got TCS (VW version of ASR) they did not get a version of EDL.....this is why I got the Fabia as EDL is very good.......used on the Subaru Imp' P1...also known as "fiddle brakes" in hill climbing. B)

My Polo claims to have EDL, but no ASR/TCS/ESP. :S

Whatever its got, it seems rubbish as it happily spins the wheels in 2nd/3rd if driven right (or wrong depending on your view!). Although I guess EDL wouldn't stop wheel spin, would it?, just makes both wheels spin at the same rate? Whatever. It goes round corners without crashing, didn't get stuck/spin in the snow and has no grip issues so . . .

Big fan of DSC/ESP (and the LSD) though on my Mazda, seems very good at its job so far.

ESP is excellent until the pump fails :) Got it on my Octavia vRS, never really noticed it until I got the G201 error and everything dropped into basic ABS. Even with ESP, I have had a couple of hairy moments spinning on the spot when trying to get out of very greasy junctions.

Eerrrrrrrr not quite.........what you are thinking of is MSR (Mechanical Slip Regulation) this uses the engines ECU to reduce the torque output to the drive wheels, where as EDL uses the cars ABS system to brake one or other of the drive wheels. Been looking into the old specs for the cars and on Fabia it looks like you got ABS on its own and maybe with MSR, but EDL was only available on Skoda with ASR, as you got EDL as ASR needs it. EDL makes sure that both drive wheels rotate at the same speed (like an LSD), ASR makes sure that the drive wheels rotate at the same speed as the non driven wheels.

MSR was defo on the VRS and this would cause the "pulled out into the juction foot down then power cut and left me stranded"...type situation.

EDL is very good as it does act as an LSD by sensing if one drive wheel is going faster (spinning) than the other and braking that drive wheel so that both drive wheels are going at the same speed! If it is good enough for Prodrive and for hill climbing then it's good enough for me. HOWEVER....a top quality Quaife LSD is the proper mechanical original...but cost a bit to install and buy...and not made for all cars so EDL is a good compromise!! B)

That would explain the slightly warmer brakes when driven hard then :)

MSR stands for motor slip regulation if you want to get picky and alters engine ECU settings to stop wheels locking on change down of gear if done abrubtly in poor conditions.

I said EDL uses ABS in the quoted post so not sure what the correction is about.

And as pointed out other group cars use the system without TCS or ESP, Audi used it on the earliest A3 models in the late 90s.

The way you said it in you above post gave the impression that you got EDL with ABS with or without ASR or TCS, when in fact (this thread and I were talking about the Fabia) you got nothing, or ABS only, or ABS & ASR (ASR which included EDL!)....or an option of ESP which also included ASR, EDL, ABS.

It may be no LSD (which is mechanical) but as I stated in previous post re Prodrive using and it being used in hill climb racing...it is very effective and it does stop wheel spin to an extent...that is it's function......to make sure that both the front wheels are rotating at the same speed. B)

So you don't need to keep the ASR on in say snowy conditions to get the advantage of the EDL.
